Wevr Launches Premium Subscription Service for Virtual Reality Content

Virtual reality startup Wevr is adding a new service to its Transport app – premium subscriptions. Transport is an independent, curated virtual reality (VR) network where VR creatives and producers can share their content, build an audience and create a community of like-minded users. The Transport app has a free version, but it is now launching an annual premium subscription. The Mobile (360 video only) subscription is $8 a year, and the PC & Mobile (360 video and room scale) subscription is $20 a year.

A Profitable and Growing Washington Post Doubles Digital Subscriptions

In a memo sent to Washington Post staff last week, publisher Fred Ryan announced to employees that the Post would finish the year as “a profitable and growing company,” reports Poynter. He credited the entire team with the company’s success, including the journalism team for editorial content, the sales team for monetizing the new outlets’ products and optimizing new opportunities, and the engineering team for creating new products and launching Arc Publishing, a tool for digital publishers.

Microsoft and LinkedIn Seal the Deal after Receiving EU Approval

The European Union gave its blessing to Microsoft, allowing the $26.2 billion acquisition to close after six months of regulatory review. The deal was finally sealed last Thursday, joining the world’s leading professional network and the cloud and software giant. In a blog post on LinkedIn, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella spoke about the acquisition and the companies’ plans for moving forward as one.

Lee Enterprises Reports Fiscal Year End Earnings of $36 Million

This weekend Lee Enterprises (NYSE: Lee) reported its quarterly and fiscal year financials for the period ended September 25, 2016. Lee, which provides news, information and advertising in 50 U.S. markets in 22 states, posted quarterly earnings of $0.7 million, or $0.01 per diluted common share. Earnings for the same period last year totaled $10.1 million, or $0.18 per diluted common share. For the fiscal year, Lee earnings were $36.0 million, or $0.64 per diluted common share, compared to $24.3 million, or $0.43 per diluted common share, for the prior year.

Amazon Adds HBO and Cinemax Now Channels for Amazon Prime Members

Last Thursday Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) added two more premium channels – HBO and Cinemax – to Amazon Channels, bringing the total number of video subscriptions to over 80 available to Amazon Prime members. For $14.99 a month, Prime members can subscribe to HBO. For $9.99 a month, they can subscribe to Cinemax. These new additions to Amazon’s channel line-up make one-stop OTT shopping easier for cord cutting consumers, while creating recurring revenue for subscription companies.

The (Tulsa) Frontier Drops Its Paywall, Transitions to a Nonprofit

Last week The (Tulsa) Frontier dropped its paywall, after its first year in business. Starting December 1, readers will no longer have to pay for a monthly membership. They are also transitioning from a for-profit model to a nonprofit one. “After our first full year at The Frontier, we’re proud of the success we’ve achieved and the impact we’ve had on our community.
