Last Thursday Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) added two more premium channels – HBO and Cinemax – to Amazon Channels, bringing the total number of video subscriptions to over 80 available to Amazon Prime members. These new additions to Amazon’s channel line-up make one-stop OTT TV shopping easier for cord cutting consumers, while creating recurring revenue for subscription companies.

For $14.99 a month, Prime members can sign up for an HBO subscription to watch the latest episodes of its new shows like Westworld, The Night Of and Divorce, as well as full seasons of Game of Thrones and Silicon Valley. HBO also offers original programming, documentaries, miniseries, specials and a variety of popular movies including Deadpool, Straight Outta Compton and Steve Jobs.

“HBO has produced some of the most groundbreaking, beloved and award-winning shows in television history. Their selection of blockbuster movies is unsurpassed, including hits like Batman vs. Superman, The Revenant, and Deadpool. And, our customers have been asking when all that wonderful content will be available on Amazon Channels,” said Michael Paull, Vice President, Digital Video, Amazon, in a prss release.

“Prime members can now watch the latest episodes of the critically-acclaimed Westworld and Game of Thrones without the need for a cable subscription. We’re thrilled to work with HBO to bring their cutting-edge content to Amazon Prime members with Amazon Channels,” Paull added.

Cinemax is also new to the Amazon Channels line-up. For $9.99 a month, Prime members can watch a variety of popular movies like Fast and Furious 7, American Sniper, Mad Max: Fury Rode, Pitch Perfect 2, Trainwreck and Jurassic World, along with original series including Knick, Quarry, Outcast, Banshee and Strike Back.

Amazon Prime, of course, has its own programming included with the standard subscription, so members can watch Amazon original series like Good Girls Revolt, The Man in the High Castle and Mozart in the Jungle as well as TV series, web series and movies. Channels like HBO and Cinemax are premium add-ons. Other video subscription channels available through Amazon Channels include Motor Trend On Demand, SeeSo, Showtime, Gaia, Curiosity Stream, PBS Kids and Starz.

The advantage to signing up for HBO and Cinemax directly through Amazon is that a cable subscription is no longer needed to access those premium channels, and a free 30-day trial is included with all sign-ups. Also, the networks can be streamed on more than 650 compatible devices including smartphones, tablets and computers with a Wi-Fi connection.

Another plus to going through Amazon for these premium networks is that Prime members have one portal to access all of their video subscriptions, so there is only one user ID and password to remember. Amazon has made it convenient to use, but also cost effective because it supports cord cutting for those who want to break away from pricy cable packages.

Of course, all of these streaming video on demand services are just part of the Amazon Prime package for members. That membership also includes free two-day shipping, free music through Prime Music (different than its new streaming subscription music service), secure photo storage, unlimited reading through Prime Reading and more.

Insider Take:

We are Amazon Prime members and with all the new perks and opportunities, we can’t imagine why someone would ever leave. Whether a member is paying the $99* annual fee, or a $10.99 monthly charge, Amazon Prime offers so much, and Amazon is constantly adding new content and services, which is likely to improve its customer retention rate.

The addition of new channels is a bonus, and a great opportunity for video subscription services. They get in front of Amazon’s members, believed to be above 54 million in the U.S., and smaller content creators get the chance to earn revenue through various options via Amazon Video Direct. Amazon Prime’s video offerings are good for subscription companies big and small as well as consumers who want to customize their premium channels in one spot.

[*Note: Some annual subscribers may pay more if they signed up through other services like Sprint.]
