SoundCloud One Step Closer to Subscription Service with Sony Deal

Rumors have been flying about SoundCloud’s forthcoming subscription service since last summer, but a new deal with Sony Music Entertainment has cinched it. This latest agreement gives SoundCloud deals with all three major labels – Sony, Universal and Warner. According to Billboard, SoundCloud previously had an agreement with Sony, but in May 2015, Sony pulled music from SoundCloud pages because there was no way to monetize the content.

The Guardian to Slash 250 Jobs as Part of Three-Year Cost-Cutting Plan

On Thursday, Guardian Media Group, publisher of the Guardian and the Observer, announced it will lay off 250 employees, as it restructures the less profitable parts of the company. The layoffs are part of the company’s three-year cost-cutting plan announced earlier this year. Of the 250 jobs to be cut, 100 will come from an editorial staff of 725 and 150 from commercial departments like finance and human resources.

Aviation Week and Boeing Partner to Digitize 100 Years of Magazine Archives

To mark their respective centennial celebrations, Aviation Week & Space Technology and Boeing have digitized 100 years of Aviation Week, reports Folio. The 100-year digital archive includes more than 4,500 issues totalling about half a million pages. The digital archives will be free to registered users through the end of 2016, but are likely to become available by subscription-only starting next year.

SiriusXM Gets Serious with Second Price Hike in a Year

Satellite radio provider SiriusXM (NASDAQ: SIRI) is getting serious about its subscription rates with its second price hike in the last year, reports Music Business Worldwide. Despite Strong 2015 Financials, Shopify Is Still Losing Money

Shopify, a subscription-based ecommerce platform for small and medium-sized businesses, announced its 2015 results: revenue, volume and subscriptions are up, but profits are nonexistent. Shopify (NYSE: SHOP)(TSX: SH) posted an operating loss of $6.3 million for the fourth quarter, and a net loss of $18.8 million for the full year.
