Facebook Hopes to Appease Publishers with More Ads in Instant Articles

To appease publishers who have been disenchanted with its Instant Articles publishing platform, Facebook announced in a recent blog post that it would allow more flexibility with publisher-generated advertising. Publishers can place ads manually or, if using Facebook’s Automatic Ads Placement feature, they will now have three options to choose from. Ads can appear every 250, 350 or 500 words. Previously, the limit was 350 words.

Will Amazon Video Find Its Way to Comcast X1 Set-Top Boxes like Netflix?

Last year Comcast wooed – and won – Netflix and Sling TV, making it easy to stream content from these over-the-top (OTT) services through its X1 set-top box. Bloomberg reports that Amazon Video is open to a similar arrangement. “Amazon is definitely open to those partnerships and to be fair, we haven’t done as much there as Netflix have done,” Alex Green, managing director of Amazon Video, said last Thursday at the Cable Congress conference in Brussels, according to Bloomberg.

Boomerang to Offer Classic Cartoon Favorites via Subscription

If you grew up with classic cartoons like Scooby-Doo, the Flintstones, The Jetsons, Road Runner and Yogi Bear, you’ll be excited to learn that Turner and Warner Bros. have teamed up to bring them into your home for just $4.99 a month, or $39.99 a year, reports Variety. Monthly subscribers will receive a seven-day free trial, while annual subscribers will get a 30-day free trial. The ad-free, streaming video on-demand service will be named Boomerang, like the channel Boomerang TV which reaches cartoon classics to about 144 million households already.

NASCAR Launches TrackPass, An International Digital Subscription

Last week NASCAR announced the launch of TrackPass, a digital subscription created specifically for an international audience. TrackPass will offer live racing action, including 38 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and 33 NASCAR XFINITY Series events in 120 countries and territories outside the U.S. and Canada. NASCAR fans can view live racing events events via NASCAR’s live TV partners or on mobile devices with a subscription to TrackPass. Additional expansion is planned later this the year.

Salesforce Boasts Q4 Subscription and Support Revenue of $2.11 Billion

Last week SaaS provider Salesforce (NYSE: CRM) posted its fiscal 2017 fourth quarter and full year results, including fourth quarter revenue of $2.29 billion, a 27 percent increase year-over-year, and subscription and support revenue of $2.11 billion, a 25 percent increase year-over-year. Professional services and other revenue made up the remaining $183 million, a 45 percent increase year-over-year. Subscription and support revenue represents 92 percent of total revenue, while professional services and other revenue account for the other 8 percent.

Microsoft Announces Launch of Xbox Game Pass Subscription This Spring

Last week Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) announced the launch of Xbox Game Pass, a new gaming subscription plan set to go live later this spring. For $9.99 a month, subscribers get unlimited play of more than 100 games, including Halo 5: Guardians, Payday 2, Mad Max, NBA 2K16, LEGO Batman, Gears of War, Soul Caliber II and more. The games can be downloaded directly to Xbox One consoles, so streaming, bandwidth and connectivity issues aren’t a concern, and the games can be played online or off.

Tronc Reports Net Income of $6.5M for 2016 Despite Revenue Declines

Despite the distraction of takeover attempts by Gannett and bold rebranding last year, tronc Inc. (NASDAQ: TRNC) finished 2016 with a few positive notes, including net income for the fourth quarter of $19 million, a significant increase over the net loss of $0.1 million for the same period last year. This included a $46 million pre-tax charge related to the company’s employee voluntary separation program. Net income per share for the fourth quarter was $0.53. Net income per share for the full year was $0.19.
