Meta SaaS Raises $1.5 Million in Seed Funding, Led by Mark Cuban

Last week Meta SaaS, a SaaS management tool for small and medium businesses, announced it has raised $1.5 million in a seed funding round led by Mark Cuban of Shark Tank fame. Additional investors in this funding round include Barracuda Networks, data.world, Brett Hurt of Bazaarvoice, Capital Factor and Deep Space Ventures. Start-up Meta SaaS, which operates under a subscription model, helps companies identify and manage their SaaS subscriptions and licenses that are un- or underutilized.

Online Razor Wars Heat Up as Schick Launches Razor Subscription

Last week the online razor wars got more heated when Edgewell Personal Care Company (NYSE: EPC) announced the launch of Schick Hydro, an online subscription service for razor blade refills that fit their own Schick Hydro razor as well as Schick Hydro Connect refills which fit Gillette Fusion and Mach3 handles. Schick is the latest entrant to the razor subscription market, following in the footsteps of Gillette, Harry’s and the Dollar Shave Club, purchased by Unilever last summer. Initially, the Schick Hydro Connect refills will only be available online.

Syndicated Radio Network ‘Music of Your Life’ Launches Subscription

Last week syndicated music radio network Music of Your Life, Inc. announced it was launching a commercial-free premium subscription for listeners. Following a one-month free trial, for $5 a month, subscribers will get the Music of Your Life AM and FM simulcast, featuring rock, country, jazz, pop hits, podcasts and more. The premium subscription will also offer live concerts streamed from Los Angeles area venues like The Canyon, The Saban, The Rose and The Libbey.

Cox Automotive and Holman Enterprises Launch Flexdrive

Cox Automotive who publishes Autotrader and Kelley Blue Book, formed a joint venture with Holman Enterprises, an international automotive services company, to launch Flexdrive, a vehicle subscription and services platform that allows car dealerships to offer subscriptions in addition to traditional buying and leasing. Using the Flexdrive mobile app, consumers can subscribe to a car within minutes without having to worry about insurance, vehicle maintenance or roadside assistance. Subscribers can change vehicles at any time, based on availability.

Kids’ Activity Membership Program KidPass Raises $5.1 Million

A year and a half after launch, KidPass, a monthly kids’ activity membership program based in New York City, announced they raised $5.1 million in Series A funding led by Javelin Venture Partners. New and existing investors including CoVenture, Y Combinator, TIA Ventures, Bionic Fund, Cocoon Ignite Ventures and FJ Labs also participated in the latest funding round. KidPass said that Jed Katz, managing director at Javelin, and Rachel Jarrett, president of Zola, would join the board of directors.

Microsoft’s Much Awaited Xbox Game Pass Will Launch on June 1

On Wednesday, Microsoft announced that its new Xbox One game subscription service Game Pass will launch in 31 markets on June 1. Xbox Live Gold subscribers received early access as of May 24. Subscribers will get unlimited downloads and play of more than 100 Xbox One and 360 backward compatible games, including Halo 5 Guardians, Payday 2: Crimewave Edition, BioShock Infinite, Fable III and NBA 2K16, for $9.99 a month, following a 14-day free trial. Xbox will add new games to the catalog monthly.

Scribd Adds Newspapers to Subscription Reading Service

All-you-can-read subscription service Scribd is evolving once again, adding newspaper content including articles from The New York Times, Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, the Guardian, NPR and ProPublica, reports Publishers Weekly. Scribd is not, however, changing its pricing. Subscribers will still pay $8.99 a month for access to three books, one audiobook and unlimited access to select magazines, news articles and documents, following a 30-day free trial. Scribd does not plan to offer breaking news, but it will focus on national and international stories, particularly longform, evergreen content curated by former journalists.
