Pandora Reports Growing Revenue and Subscriber Base in Q4 Financials

Last Thursday Pandora (NYSE: P) reported its fourth quarter and full year 2016 financials. While there were many positives including $392.6 million of total revenue in the fourth quarter, a 17 percent increase year-over-year, and 4.39 million subscribers in Q4, a 12 percent increase year-over-year, the company still reported a staggering loss of $90 million for the quarter and $343 million for the full year.

New York Times Grew Digital Ad Revenue and Subscriptions in Q4

Last Thursday the New York Times Company (NYSE: NYT) posted its fourth quarter financials and full-year 2016 results. There’s good news and bad news. In the fourth quarter, the Times added 276,000 net new digital news subscriptions, its best quarter since 2011 when it began using the digital pay model. For the full year, it added 583,000 net digital-only subscribers.

Medium to Launch Consumer Subscription Product Soon

Digital publishing platform Medium is adding a consumer subscription product in the next quarter, reports TechCrunch. Ev Williams, Medium’s CEO, made the announcement last week at the Upfront Summit. According to Williams’ announcement, the first version of the product will launch this spring and he calls it an “upgrade” to the current reader experience. This news comes just one month after Williams announced major changes at Medium, including the elimination of 50 jobs, closing of its New York and Washington, D.C. offices and the elimination of a native advertising model that two dozen or so publishers had been testing.

Meredith Corp. to Lay Off 40 Employees in Company Reorganization

Just a week after reporting record earnings per share, Meredith Corp. (NYSE: MDP) announced that it will lay off 40 employees, half in New York, 10 in Des Moines and the remaining 10 at other locations, reports ABC News. Art Slusark, spokesman for Meredith, said the staff cuts are part of the company’s overall reorganization which included promotions, new assignments and a 1 percent reduction of the company’s 3,800-member workforce.

Amazon Reports Net Income of $749 Million for Q4 2016 But Stock Drops

Last week Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) posted its fourth quarter financials for 2016. Financial highlights included net sales of $43.7 billion, a 22 percent increase year-over-year; operating income of $1.3 billion, a 13 percent increase year-over-year; and net income of $749 million, or $1.54 per diluted share, compared to $482 million, or $1.00 per diluted share, for the same period last year.Despite the positive Q4 financials, Amazon stock dipped on Friday, the day after the earnings report was posted.

Walmart Abandons Two-Day Shipping Membership Program ShippingPass

Walmart announced that it is discontinuing its two-day shipping membership program, ShippingPass, effective January 31, 2017. The program first launched in May of 2015 as a three-day shipping program that allowed members to receive unlimited shipping for $49 a year. At launch, the program was available by invitation only and it only included about 1 million of Walmart’s 8 million online items. Then, in May of 2016, Walmart upgraded the program to offer unlimited two-day shipping with no minimum order requirements.
