FCC Repeals Net Neutrality Rules

In a controversial move last Thursday, the Federal Communications Commission repealed net neutrality, voting to overturn what it called heavy-handed, unnecessary governmental oversight over internet service providers. Net neutrality was enacted under the Obama administration in 2015 to impose fairness and openness across the internet, prohibiting ISPs from blocking or slowing down certain websites or providing preferential treatment to companies willing to pay for premium access or service.

Patreon Rethinks New Fee Structure After Creators Balk

We messed up.’ That was Patreon CEO Jack Conte’s response to creators who balked after the company announced new changes to their fee structure last week which, creators said, would result in the loss of patrons who make small contributions. Under the new fee structure, Patreon planned to replace its existing 5 percent cut plus third-party payment processing fees with a 2.9 percent fee structure plus a $0.35 fee per pledge to be passed on to patrons, effective December 18.

T-Mobile to Acquire Layer3 TV and Launch Online TV Service in 2018

Yesterday T-Mobile president and CEO John Legere announced that T-Mobile is going to ‘un-carrier’ TV in 2018, the company’s next phase in its mobile video strategy. According to the announcement, the Bellevue, Washington-based wireless carrier has agreed to acquire TV technology company Layer3TV, Inc. and work with them to create a disruptive, new online TV service for T-Mobile.

JCPenney Partners with Bombfell for Big & Tall Men’s Subscription Box

JCPenney is leveraging its big and tall customer base in partnership with Bombfell to create a subscription box for men called the Big & Tall Box, reports The Dallas News. Similar to Stitch Fix and Nordstrom’s Trunk Club, JCPenney’s new subscription service helps men create everything from office attire and polished looks to activewear and casual clothes with the assistance of a personal stylist. The companies have not disclosed the terms of their partnership.

On Friday, Boston Herald publisher Patrick J. Purcell told staff that GateHouse Media LLC would acquire The Herald and its assets for $4.5 million in cash, subject to court approval. Education and technology company Cengage is hopping on the subscription bandwagon with Cengage Unlimited, providing college students with unlimited, all-you-can-learn, on demand access to educational materials. Launching in the summer of 2018, the digital subscription gives students access to a library of more than 20,000 eBooks and 2,300 digital learning products across 70 disciplines and more than 675 courses, plus online homework and study tools, for $119.99 per semester.
