JCPenney is leveraging its big and tall customer base in partnership with Bombfell to create a subscription box for men called the Big & Tall Box, reports The Dallas News. Similar to Stitch Fix and Nordstrom’s Trunk Club, JCPenney’s new subscription service helps men create everything from office attire and polished looks to activewear and casual clothes with the assistance of a personal stylist. The companies have not disclosed the terms of their partnership.

‘Men want to be stylish, too, but everyone is busy and starved for time,’ said Mike Amend, executive vice president of omnichannel for JCPenney. ‘Here’s a better way: they receive a shipment that’s trend right, personalized and in season.’

When subscribers sign up, they fill out a brief questionnaire to share their style preferences and the types of clothing and accessories they want in their next box. A dedicated Bombfell stylist will then personally choose five pieces from a curated selection JCPenney’s most popular big and tall brands such as Stafford, St. John’s Bay, Levi’s and Nike and send the customer a preview email. The customer then has 48 hours to make changes or cancel the order.

Otherwise, the Big & Tall Box is sent out as designed, arriving on the subscriber’s doorstep in two to 10 business days via FedEx or USPS. Subscribers have seven days after receipt to try on the items in their box, returning what they don’t want with tags intact. They are charged for the items they keep at an average price of $39 per item. There is no charge for shipping, and the $20 styling fee is applied toward any purchases.

JCPenney will accept returns of the items up to 30 days for a full refund. For returns after 30 days, customers will receive store credit for the purchases minus a $10 restocking fee. If all items in a particular shipment are returned, the styling fee is not refundable. Item cannot be returned to a JCPenney store or JCP.com.

The default option is for the Big & Tall Box to be shipped monthly, but subscribers can change the frequency to once every two or three months. Top sizes run from MT through 5XL and waist sizes range between 42 and 60 inches with multiple inseam lengths available.

In an interview with CNBC, a JCPenney spokeswoman said the company plans to learn from this experience over the next few months.

‘The benefit of learning with Bombfell is they are the ones who have the platform and the means of doing this, and we also have a large big and tall customer base,’ the spokeswoman told CNBC. ‘We think this demonstrates we are meeting the evolution of the next phase of retail.’

With a seemingly endless supply of subscription boxes on the market now, subscription box companies need to create personalized experiences for their subscribers and/or find an unfilled niche to set themselves apart from similar companies. At the same time, retailers need to find a new way to meet shoppers where they want to shop – at home.

This type of subscription box is the perfect marriage of these ideas, and partnering with another company who has the skills and capacity to execute a solid plan is a great way for JCPenney to test this market and diversify its revenue streams. It is also a way for JCPenney to familiarize potentially new shoppers with its big and tall brands which could bring some subscribers to the store for future purchases.
