Facebook Is Testing Subscriptions for Groups

Earlier this year, Mark Zuckerberg announced major changes to Facebook, citing a desire to get back to the social media platform’s friends-and-family roots. Another major change may be coming our way soon – paying to belong to a Facebook group. According to a June 20 blog post, Facebook is testing an idea that would give group administrators the ability to charge subscription fees to support their work and help them invest in their online communities.

Red Hat Reports Double-Digit Revenue Growth for Q1 FY 2019

For the first quarter of fiscal year 2019, Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT) reports double-digit growth in a number of categories, including total revenue and subscription revenue. Total revenue for the quarter was $813.5 million. Representing 87.5 percent of total revenue, subscription revenue for Q1 FY 2019 was $711.5 million, a 19 percent increase year-over-year. This is broken down into infrastructure-related offerings at $522 million, a 14 percent increase year-over-year, and application development-related and other emerging technology offerings at $189 million, a 37 percent increase. Training and services revenue of $102.0 million makes up the remaining 12.5 of revenue.

Eligible YouTube Creators Can Now Offer Channel Memberships

Eligible YouTube creators have two new opportunities to monetize their work: channel memberships and merchandise sales. YouTube announced the news on its blog last Friday. With new channel memberships, viewers pay $4.99 a month to get special badges, new emojis, members-only posts in the Community tab and access to unique perks offered by creators which could include exclusive livestreams, extra videos, news, early access to ticket sales or even shout-outs. YouTube will get 30 percent of revenue, and creators will get 70 percent.

Supreme Court Rules States Can Collect Internet Sales Tax

Last week the U.S. Supreme Court found in favor of the state of South Dakota in South Dakota v. Wayfair, Inc., overturning a 1992 Quill decision that required businesses to have a physical location in a jurisdiction for the state to collect sales tax. In a 5-4 vote, the Supreme Court overturned the ruling because the 1992 case no longer applied in an era of ecommerce. This new ruling means state and local governments can require internet sellers to collect sales tax, even if they do not have a physical location. Justice Anthony M. Kennedy said the Quill decision could be causing states to lose tax revenue of up to $33 billion annually.

AMC Theatres Launches VIP Subscription for Moviegoers

On Wednesday, AMC Theatres, a long-time critic of movie subscription service MoviePass, announced the launch of its own subscription – AMC Stubs A-List, a new VIP tier of its loyalty program. Priced at $19.95 per month plus tax, the subscription will allow moviegoers to see up to three movies per week, including multiple movies per day and repeat visits to movies they’ve already seen. The subscription can be used at all AMC, AMC Dine-in and AMC Classic theatres in the U.S., and it is valid on premium showings including IMAX, Dolby Cinema, RealD 3D, Prime and BigD movies.
