The Daily Only Has 80,000 Paid Subscribers

Rupert Murdoch’s iPad-only subscription newspaper The Daily has just 80,000 paid subscribers, a sixth of the the number needed to break even. Recently word came out that the daily Murdoch has an average of 120,000 readers per week, but there was no confirmation of the paid number. The Daily offers a free two-week trial. Publisher E.W. Scripps rolled out paywalls on two of its newspaper Web sites last month – The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal and The Wichita Falls (Texas) Times Record News. The Press of Atlantic City Erects Paywall

The Press of Atlantic City this week began charging for access to its Web site for readers who would like to access more than 10 articles per month. Digital subscriptions now cost $6.95 per month or $69.95 per month. During local emergencies, such as hurricanes, the news site will open up its content for free. Microsoft’s Zune Pass Changing Subscription Pricing for Music

Microsoft will be introducing a new, lower priced version of Zune Music Pass October 3 at $9.99 per month. According to Zune Insider, “The plan will provide unlimited, on-demand access to more than 14 million songs and tens of thousands of music videos. The Allentown Morning Call is erecting a paywall on the same day (October 10) another Tribune-owned newspaper, The Baltimore Sun, will also begin to charge frequent readers. To date, News Corp.’s The Daily is averaging 120,000 readers a week, far less than the 500,000 that Rubert Murdoch says the online publication needs to succeed, reports BusinessWeek. The Baltimore Sun Will Be First Tribune Newspaper to Erect Paywall

On October 10, The Baltimore Sun will become the first Tribune Co. newspaper to erect a paywall.
