The Press of Atlantic City this week began charging for access to its Web site for readers who would like to access more than 10 articles per month. Digital subscriptions now cost $6.95 per month or $69.95 per month. During local emergencies, such as hurricanes, the news site will open up its content for free.Publisher Keith Dawn justifies the paywall due to large traffic increases to the site over the past two years. The Press says traffic in August was 5.67 million page views, up 46 percent from the year before and 85 percent from two years ago. “This tells us our Web site, PressofAtlanticCity.com, has matured into a content and information product with a reach that is far greater than any local Web site,” Dawn wrote in a letter to readers. The Press is just the latest in a growing number (nearly 60 in all) of American newspapers erecting paywalls.
