Yesterday Amazon-owned Audible announced the launch of Channels, a short-form audio subscription service that will bring news, entertainment and original programming to the world of audio content. The new service will be free to Audible subscribers, but it will also be available as a standalone subscription for $4.95 a month. Subscriber Files Class Action Suit Against Netflix Over Price Increase

Netflix is also on the ropes as folks fight back against the pending $2 a month price increase. A Florida subscriber filed a suit against Netflix, saying that the streaming video provider has failed to honor its contract to grandfather him in at the $7.99 a month rate. Does the subscriber have a legitimate beef, or is he simply looking to cash in on Netflix’s success? The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, San Jose Division, will decide.

Amazon Prime Signs Exclusive, Multi-Year Deal with PBS KIDS

Amazon has signed a multi-year deal with PBS to offer popular PBS KIDS series to Amazon Prime members, making it the exclusive premium subscription streaming provider for PBS’s family-friendly content. In addition, Amazon announced that its second annual Prime Day will be held next Tuesday, July 12, helping position Amazon Prime as a “must have” subscription.

Tribune’s tronc Rebuffs Gannett Takeover with Rebranding

In a surprising move, Tribune Publishing has rebranded itself as tronc, Inc., launching a redesigned website and jumping ship from the New York Stock Exchange to NASDAQ. The changes are part of a larger company reorganization and restructuring which has media experts scratching their heads. Facebook Spends $50 Million to 140 Media Companies and Celebrities for Live Video

Facebook is betting big on Live Video, its new live broadcasting tool, spending more than $50 million to entice 140 or so media companies, pro athletes and celebrities to create live video streams to share on the social media network, said the Wall Street Journal. Why? To cash in on potential advertising opportunities that Live Video might generate by further engaging its audience of 1.65 billion monthly Facebook users.

New Study Shows News Magazine Single-Copy Digital Sales Up 30 Percent

A recent Pew Research Center study of 14 news magazines shows single copy sales for digital issues are up an average of 30 percent and digital subscriptions are up 6 percent, while print subscriptions and newsstand sales dropped slightly. Though the data varies across titles, most of the magazines saw year-over-year gains in their website traffic as well, reports Pew Research Center.

Adblock Plus Suffers a Blow in German Courts

After winning several previous victories against media organizations in German courts, Adblock Plus lost its latest battle in the Cologne higher regional court. Adobe Reports 20 Percent Revenue Growth for Fiscal Q2 2016

Last week Adobe (NASDAQ: ADBE) reported impressive financials for the second quarter of fiscal year 2016, which ended June 3. At the top of the highlights was record quarterly revenue of $1.4 billion, representing a year-over-year increase of 20 percent. Additional highlights include subscription revenue of $1.1 billion, a 40 percent year-over-year increase, and huge gains in year-over-year operating and net income. But investors still aren’t happy, driving stock down after the earnings report.
