Google Signs CBS to New OTT TV Subscription Service, Unplugged

Google (NASDAQ: GOOG, GOOGL) is offering a new over-the-top TV service called Unplugged to offer TV lovers an alternative to pricey cable bundles, reports Media Post’s Television News Daily. Similar to DISH’s Sling TV, Unplugged will be a “skinny bundle,” giving subscribers a handful of live TV channels for a set monthly price. While Google hasn’t stated so publicly, media outlets estimate the price range to be between $25 and $50 a month.

McClatchy Reports $9.8 Million Net Loss in Q3, Decline in Ad Revenue

Last week McClatchy Co. (NYSE: MNI) reported disappointing results for the third quarter of 2016, including a net loss of $9.8 million, compared to net income of $1.1 million for the same period last year. The adjusted net loss after compensating for severance payments, technology conversions costs, etc. was $2.1 million, compared to an adjusted net income last year of $3.2 million. Purple Carrot Subscription Meal Kits Announces Whole Foods Partnership

This morning Purple Carrot, a whole food, plant-based meal kit subscription delivery service, announced its partnership with Whole Foods Market’s North Atlantic region. Starting today, Purple Carrot’s vegan meal kits will be carried in Whole Food’s North Atlantic flagship store in Dedham, Massachusetts, priced at $19.99 each. Wall Street Journal Offers Buyouts to News Employees Worldwide

As part of a greater restructuring by Dow Jones & Co., the Wall Street Journal is offering voluntary severance packages to a “substantial number” of news employees worldwide, reports CNN Money. The news was announced last week in a staff email from editor-in-chief Gerard Baker. The goal is to limit staff layoffs through the buyouts. Staff have until the end of the month to take advantage of the voluntary severance, though the company has the right to reject volunteers. These aren’t the only changes in the works though.

Microsoft Reports $4.7 Billion in Net Income for Q1 FY 2017

Last Thursday Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) reported results for its first quarter of the fiscal year 2017, ended September 30, 2016. The company reported net income of $4.7 billion GAAP, operating income of $5.2 billion GAAP, revenue of $20.5 billion GAAP, and diluted earnings per share of $0.60 GAAP. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said the company’s first quarter 2017 results reflect continued demand for cloud-based services.

Netflix Far Exceeds Forecast with Subscription Revenue of $2 Billion

On Monday, Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) reported record subscription revenue of $2 billion, representing a 36 percent increase over the same period last year. This is the first time Netflix has exceeded the $2 billion revenue mark. In a letter to shareholders, Netflix attributed the increase to its strong content which includes the popular Netflix original series Stranger Things and the second season of Narcos. Netflix’s incredible results for Q3 have driven Netflix up nearly 20 percent.
