Streaming Music Platform SoundCloud to Cut 40 Percent of Staff

In a blog post from SoundCloud co-founder and CEO Alex Ljung last week, SoundCloud announced it would cut 173 jobs and consolidate its team into its Berlin and New York offices, closing its London and San Francisco offices. The job cuts represent approximately 41 percent of the company’s workforce of 420 employees, reported Business Insider. Ljung said the company needs to cut costs and grow advertising and subscription revenue to reach profitability and to remain in control of the streaming music platform’s future.

Payment Processor Vantiv to Buy Worldpay for $10 Billion

On July 4, Worldpay Group PLC announced via the London Stock Exchange that it had been approached by Vantiv Inc. and JPMorgan Chase Bank about a possible acquisition. The companies were given until August 1 to make a firm offer or to withdraw themselves from consideration. News of a potential sale drove up stock prices by about 23 percent, reports The New York Times, bringing the company’s value to about $10.5 billion or 8 billion pounds.

Amazon Primes the Pump for Its Third Annual Prime Day on July 11

Last week Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) announced that its third annual Prime Day will be next Tuesday, July 11, 2017. Expanding to China, India and Mexico, Prime Day will be available in 13 countries, so Prime members in those countries will get access to hundreds of thousands of deals for 30 straight hours, starting at 6 PM Pacific Time/9 PM Eastern on July 10. Amazon says that nearly 40 percent of lightning deals worldwide will come from small businesses and entrepreneurs on Prime Day too.

Yahoo Mail Releases Major Redesign Including Ad-Free Subscriptions

Last week Yahoo introduced the new Yahoo Mail to help its 225 million users get more organized with a faster, more personalized and streamlined email experience, reports TechCrunch. The redesigned Yahoo Mail includes more robust search functionality by contact name, date or keyword; colorful themes, stationary, emojis and GIFs, and views to organize content like photos and documents visually. Microsoft Reorganization Shifts Focus Toward Growing Cloud Business

For the last week, news organizations have been eagerly anticipating an announcement of a major reorganization at Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) which, reportedly, would include thousands of layoffs. Tinder Launches Tinder Gold, a Members-Only Premium Subscription
