Meredith Combines Two Magazines, Sells TIME and Will Cut 200 Jobs

This has been a big week for Meredith Corporation (NYSE: MDP). Last week, Meredith announced it would merge Cooking Light and EatingWell magazines to create one product with a combined circulation base of 1.775 million. Hailed by Meredith as the largest magazine in epicurean history, the new subscription product will retain the EatingWell brand and relaunch in the January/February 2019 issue, the first of 10 issues each year.

Adobe Reports Record Quarterly Revenue of $2.29 Billion

Adobe’s transition to the subscription model continues to be successful, as the SaaS company reports record revenue for the third quarter of its fiscal year 2018, ended August 31, 2018. Adobe (NASDAQ: ADBE) earned $2.29 billion in quarterly revenue, a 24 percent increase over the same period the prior year. Subscription revenue of $2.02 billion represented 88.2 percent of total revenue. Revenue from products and services and support made up the remainder.

Lee Enterprises Shuts Down Missoula Independent Without Warning

Imagine showing up for work one morning, being locked out of the office and having your email and website shut down. That’s what happened to 12 employees last Tuesday at the Missoula Independent, a 27-year-old alternative newsweekly based in Missoula, Montana. The decision was made by Lee Enterprises, the newspaper’s owner for the last year-and-a-half, but there was no warning. Employees were told they would receive salary and benefits through October 10, and instructed to contact the Missoulian, a Lee Enterprises-owned daily newspaper, to make arrangements to collect their personal belongings.

Fans Can Now Watch NFL Games Online – No Subscription Needed

In an attempt to entice viewers to make time for their favorite teams online, the NFL is embracing subscription-free streaming of NFL games, so fans can watch football on the go. Last week NFL Digital Media announced the live streaming of football games would be “more broadly available,” allowing fans to watch live local and most primetime NFL games on their phones and tables through the NFL app, at NFL.com, on Yahoo Sports and other Verizon-owned mobile properties, the NFL said in an announcement.

The Wrap Acquires VideoInk and Plans to Add Subscription Services

Last week, entertainment and media news site The Wrap News Inc. announced they would acquire VideoInk, Inc., a business news site about the evolving digital video industry. VideoInk utilizes a membership model, offering members exclusive stories, videos and events, VIP intel, education, video webinars and other perks for $1 a day. In addition, The Wrap will announce a new premium subscription of its own in the near future. This will be their first subscription venture.

Okta Reports 59 Percent Subscription Growth in Q2 for FY2019

Okta (NASDAQ: OKTA) may not be a household name now, but it could be based on the company’s financial results for its second fiscal quarter of 2019 for the period ended July 31, 2018. Among the enterprise-grade, cloud-based identity management service’s impressive results is total revenue of $94.6 million, a 57 percent increase year-over-year and subscription revenue of $87.9 million, a 59 percent increase year-over-year.

CBS Asks Les Moonves to Step Down Due to Sexual Harassment Allegations

Moonves is out and Ianniello is in, said CBS in a September 9 news release. CBS chairman, president and CEO Leslie Moonves has been asked by the CBS board to step down amidst sexual harassment allegations against him. Effective yesterday, chief operating officer Joseph Ianniello will serve as president and acting CEO while the board conducts a search for a permanent replacement. Until a permanent CEO has been found, the board chairman position will remain vacant. Moonves has been married to personality Julie Chen of The Talk and Big Brother fame for 14 years.

Walmart Launches Crowd-Sourced Grocery Delivery Service

Walmart is getting serious about grocery delivery. Last week the retail giant announced the launch of Spark Delivery, a new last-mile delivery service, that will help the company expand its grocery delivery options for online grocery shoppers. Walmart is currently testing Spark Delivery in Nashville and New Orleans and plans to try out the service in a few additional metropolitan areas later this year. The company has not yet disclosed those additional locations.
