Prime Day 2019 Was the Largest Shopping Event in Amazon History

Once again, Amazon – and its Prime members – have something to smile about. Amazons Prime Day 2019, which actually stretched across 48 hours, was the most successful shopping event in company history, reports Amazon. Members in 18 countries bought more than 175 million items, including everything from clothing and electronics to groceries and beauty products. Prime Day, held July 15 and 16, was also the biggest sales event ever for Amazon devices, particularly the Echo Dot, Fire TV stick, Alexa voice remote and Fire TV stick with Alexa voice remote.

Netflix Revenue Grows 26 Percent But Membership Adds Miss Forecast

Netflixs second quarter financials for 2019 offered mixed results. In a letter to shareholders yesterday, Netflix revealed quarterly revenue of $4.9 billion, representing growth of 26% year-over-year. In the not-so-great-news category, Netflix only added 2.7 million new members during the quarter, compared to the 5.0 million new members forecast and the 5.5 million new members added in the second quarter of 2018.

Charles Schwab Brings in $1B in New Assets with Subscription Service

In March, Charles Schwab launched a subscription service that is already making a big difference for the investment firm and its clients. The subscription service, called Schwab Intelligent Portfolios Premium, has already brought in $1 billion in new assets under management. Schwab has had a 25% increase in new accounts, and a 40% increase in average household assets, compared to the months prior to the subscription launch. Total client assets managed through Schwabs digital advisory solutions now equal $41 billion, a 23% increase year-over-year.

Starbucks Will Stop Selling Newspapers in September

If you enjoy going to your local Starbucks and sitting down to read The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal or USA Today, you will have to bring your own, starting sometime in September. The Seattle-based coffee company is taking newspapers off the menu, reports The New York Times. Starbucks currently carries newspapers at more than 8,600 U.S. locations. This change will not impact non-company operated Starbucks stores, like those in hotels and airports, says Starbucks spokesperson Sanja Gould.

FX Plus Streaming Subscription Service to Shut Down in August

Effective August 21, 2019, the FX+ streaming video subscription service is no more, a victim of Disneys $71 billion acquisition of 21st Century Foxs assets. For $5.99 a month, FX+ subscribers had access to more than 1,400 episodes of popular shows including The Shield, Sons of Anarchy, American Horror Story, and Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia. By shutting down the service, Disney is paving the way for potential subscribers to subscribe to Hulu, which will feature FX Networks content, or their new streaming subscription service, Disney+, set to launch this fall.

Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google to Face Congress on Antitrust Issues

Next Tuesday, July 16, representatives from Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google will testify before the House Antitrust Subcommittee to discuss concerns that a small number of dominant, unregulated platforms have extraordinary power over commerce, communication and information online. The federal government is concerned that the dominance these companies wield over the marketplace hampers competition. The antitrust committee will conduct a top-to-bottom review, the first time Congress has undertaken such an investigation of this area.

PlayStation Vue Raises Prices $5 a Month for All Multi-Channel Plans

Sony announced Monday that it is raising prices for all of its multi-channel PlayStation Vue plans by $5 a month. PlayStation Vue is Sonys over-the-top streaming TV subscription service. The price increase is effective immediately for new customers and will go into effect July 31 for current subscribers. In a blog post announcing the change, the company cited rising costs as the reason for the rate increase. PlayStation Vues last price increase was last summer, also a $5-per-month increase.
