The Atlantic Revamps Its Subscription Model with Metered Paywall

Last week, The Atlantic announced changes to its subscription model, two years after its last overhaul. The magazines newest digital subscription strategy includes slightly increased prices to its tiered subscriptions plans, starting at $49.99 a year for a one-year, digital-only subscription plan. For $59.99 a year, subscribers will receive print and digital subscriptions. For $100.00 a year, subscribers will receive print and digital subscriptions plus an ad-free experience, a complimentary gift subscription to share, discounts on the magazines products, and VIP access to Atlantic events.

FTC Goes After AH Media Group for Fraudulent Subscription Practices

Last week, the Federal Trade Commission got a preliminary injunction against AH Media Group for fraudulent subscription practices, including free trial offers and negative option subscriptions. The preliminary injunction prevents AH Media from misrepresenting their free trial offers, enrolling them in subscriptions without permission, billing customers without permission, and making it very difficult for customers to cancel their subscriptions or get refunds.

Editor and Publisher Sold to Media Consultant Mike Blinder

Last week, Duncan McIntosh announced the sale of Editor and Publisher (E&P), the insiders guide to the publishing industry. With roots dating back to 1884, the iconic trade journal was sold to media consultant Mike Blinder and his new company, The Curated Experiences Group. McIntosh is the president and group publisher of Duncan McIntosh Co., Inc. (DMC) and the previous owner of E&P. The sale closed on August 30; terms of the sale were not disclosed.

Grand Jury Indicts 8 in Illegal Streaming Subscription Service Scheme

Last week a federal grand jury indicted eight people in an illegal TV and movie streaming service scheme, following an FBI investigation. The indictment charged eight people who allegedly conspired to violate federal copyright law through the creation of two of the largest unauthorized streaming services in the U.S. – Jetflicks and iStreamItAll. As a result of this scheme, TV and movie copyright owners have lost millions of dollars from streamed and illegally downloaded content, said the Department of Justice in an August 27 news release.

Fitbit Launches New Premium Health and Fitness Subscription Service

The company is taking that up a notch, launching Fitbit Premium, a paid subscription service available through the Fitbit app or Fitbit Care. Le Tote to Buy Lord + Taylor from Hudsons Bay Company for $100M

Le Tote, Inc., an online clothing rental subscription startup, has agreed to buy the Lord + Taylor luxury department store chain from parent company Hudsons Bay Company (HBC) for $100 million. Le Tote will pay $75 million at the time the sale closes with the remaining $25 million, payable in cash in 2021. Le Tote is working on acquiring financing for the full sale price. If financing has not been secured within 45 days after signing, HBC has the right to terminate the deal.
