Miami Herald to Cut Saturday Print Edition, Expand Friday and Sunday

The Miami Herald, a McClatchy-owned newspaper, is making some big changes in the new year. Starting on March 21, 2020, the Miami Herald will no longer print a Saturday edition. Instead, it will launch a weekend edition which will include expanded Friday and Sunday papers. Popular features like local sports coverage, comics, TV listings and the real estate section will be among the items featured in the expanded papers. Sling TV Raises Monthly Subscription Price to $30 a Month

Sling TV customers got a price increase for Christmas this year. Yesterday, Sling TV president Warren Schlichting announced that Sling Orange and Sling Blue subscription customers would start paying $30 per month, effective with their next bill after January 22, 2020. New customers will get hit with the price increase immediately, though they can get a $10 discount for the first month through a promo offer. To save a few bucks, customers who subscribe to both Sling Orange and Sling Blue will pay $45 a month.

YouTube Channel New Sky Kids Launches Streaming Subscription Service

Five years after launching their first original, digital series for kids, New Sky Kids founders Felipe Adams, Leigh Adams, and Mike Akel are launching their own streaming video channel and app. With a YouTube audience of more than 2 million worldwide and videos with more than 1.5 billion views, New Sky Kids will feature new episodes of its own popular shows including High Top Princess and Little Heroes: Mighty Missions. The new streaming subscription service is currently available in the U.S. for $5.99 a month, or $59 a year, after a seven-day free trial.

Comcast to Start Offering Cheaper TV Packages Starting at $10 in 2020

Comcast plans to fight cord cutting and compete with direct-to-consumer streaming video services by selling smaller TV packages priced between $10 and $20 per month, reports Cord Cutters News. The packages are part of the companys Comcast Vision 2020 plan. In addition to prepackaged bundles, customers will be able to design their own TV bundles, including local TV channels. Equipment, such as internet routers and DVRs and services like internet and cell services, will cost extra, of course.

Lime Launches LimePass, a Weekly Scooter Subscription Service

On Tuesday, micromobility provider Lime announced the launch of LimePass, a weekly subscription service for commuters and regular scooters. Initially, the service is being rolled out in the United States, Australia and New Zealand, but it will be available in other global markets starting in January. Engadget reports the service has been in beta since March. The goal of the program is to address the changing needs of commuters and to reward those who use electric scooters and bikes to meet their daily transportation needs.

Two Plead Guilty to Piracy with Streaming Video Subscription Services

Two streaming video pirates are getting coal in their Christmas stockings this year. Four months after their indictment by a grand jury, two Las Vegas men pleaded guilty to video piracy, copyright infringement and money laundering. Eight men total were charged with operating Jetflicks and iStreamItAll, headquartered in Las Vegas. The two men who pleaded guilty – Darryl Julius Polo, aka djppimp, and Luis Angel Villarino – could receive reduced sentences as a result of the plea and by agreeing to fully cooperate in the ongoing investigation.

WWE Network Adds Free Tier to Streaming Service

World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Network has added a free tier to its streaming subscription video service to bring in new subscribers, reports Fox Business. The new tier was released via soft launch earlier this month to give non-subscribers a taste of the type of content they can expect from the premium video service. Wrestle Talk reports that many of the videos in the free tier are those that a viewer would fine on WWEs YouTube channel or on WWE.com. Once any bugs are worked out of the free tier, WWE Network will do an official launch. It isnt clear if or how this might impact the premium subscription service.

New York AG Wins $16M in Magazine and Newspaper Subscription Scam

Last Thursday New York Attorney General Letitia James won more than $16 million in restitution, penalties and legal costs in a magazine and newspaper subscription scam lawsuit. James represented more than 68,000 New York residents who had been scammed by a network of New York and Oregon companies, some operating under the name Orbital Publishing Group, Inc., who fraudulently solicited magazine and newspaper subscriptions. The New York State Supreme Court ruled in favor of the plaintiffs and permanently barred the fraudulent network of companies from mailing unauthorized and deceptive subscription offers going forward.
