Axel Springer Makes Big Digital Moves Across the Pond

Berlin-based publisher Axel Springer has big plans in the works for its U.S.-based properties in 2016, including a possible subscription model for Business Insider, reports Bloomberg Business. Axel Springer acquired an additional 88% of Business Insider in September for $343 million, bringing its ownership to 97%. The remainder is owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. After being in beta since 2014, Playster, an online multimedia and entertainment subscription service, officially launched December 10, says Publishers Weekly. Boasting the world’s most diverse digital catalog, Playster includes on-demand books, music, TV and films, and video games including timeless classics and the newest blockbusters. Live Streams and Subscriptions Bring Broadway Home

Last week Tony-winning producer Ken Davenport livestreamed his Off-Broadway musical Daddy Long Legs online for free, reports Lee Seymour for Forbes. YouTube’s Subscription SVOD Service Wants to Play with the Big Boys

In late October, YouTube launched YouTube Red, a subscription service giving users an ad-free streaming video and music experience for $9.99 a month. Six weeks in and YouTube is reportedly meeting with Hollywood executives and other production companies to secure TV and movie streaming rights, says the Wall Street Journal. Germany’s Spiegel News Magazine to Cut Staff & Launch Paywall

One of Europe’s largest news magazines, Der Spiegel, will cut staff by 20% and launch a paywall to fight a decline in advertising and circulation, said Reuters. Based in Germany, the weekly magazine has print circulation of about 870,000, and is part of the largest print market in Europe. Publishers Balk as Twitter Removes Share Counts

Two weeks ago Twitter removed share counts from Tweet buttons on publisher sites, and some publishers are upset about the change, reports DigiDay. Some of those publishers have even launched a campaign – #SaveOurShareCounts – to protest the loss of share counts.
