McClatchy to Cut Staff by 3.5 Percent and Reduce Expenses

On the heels of a dismal second quarter 2018 financial report, McClatchy (NYSE: MNI) announced it will cut 3.5 percent of staff, or 140 employees, and implement other cost-cutting measures. CNN said the announcement was sent to staff in an internal memo last week. According to CNN, president and CEO Craig Forman said the decision to cut staff was “painful and difficult” but necessary for the company’s long-term sustainability.

Xbox to Launch Subscription with Console, Xbox Live and Game Pass

What’s better than a gaming subscription? A gaming subscription that includes hardware! That’s what Microsoft is reportedly working on, says Windows Central. The new monthly subscription service is called Xbox All Access and it includes an Xbox console, Xbox Live and Game Pass. The catch – there’s a two-year commitment. Autodesk Shares Hit 52-Week High After Strong Q2 FY 2019 Report

Autodesk (NASDAQ: ADSK) shares hit a 52-week high as the company reports huge success with its subscription program in the second quarter of fiscal year 2019. Among the company’s highlights is subscription plan annualized recurring revenue of $1.68 billion, a 115 percent increase year-over-year. Total annualized recurring revenue was $2.35 billion, a 28 percent increase year-over-year. Deferred revenue was $1.80 billion representing a 1 percent increase year-over-year.

Walmart and Kobo Partner on eBook Service with Audiobook Subscription

Didn’t get to all those summer beach reads? Walmart’s got you covered with its new eBook service called Walmart eBooks. This Wednesday, Walmart announced its partnership with Rakuten Kobo, a Canadian eBook and audiobook company. Walmart eBooks will give readers access to more than 6 million titles, as well as an audiobook subscription service. For a monthly subscription fee of $9.99, book lovers get one free audiobook per month.

Acceptable Ads Committee Announces New Mobile-Specific Ad Criteria

Last week, Eyeo, parent company of Adblock Plus, announced new mobile-specific criteria developed by the independent Acceptable Ads Committee over the last several months. To create the new criteria, the committee commissioned a study and reviewed the results. The committee also surveyed 2,000 ad-blocking users to find out what they find the most disruptive about mobile ads. The new criteria address ad placement, size and animation. Eyeo said it will work closely with its partners to enforce the new mobile-specific ad criteria.

AMC Theatres Signs Up 260,000 Subscribers in First Seven Weeks

Move over, MoviePass, AMC Theatres (NYSE: AMC) is coming for you! As MoviePass continues to struggle with a sustainable business model, AMC Theatres is seeing success with its new subscription service, Stubs A-List. AMC launched the service in late June. As of mid-August, AMC had more than 260,000 paid subscribers to its new subscription service and more than 1 million moviegoers in attendance.

Tronc Reports Q2 Digital-Only Subscribers Increase of 89 Percent

The second quarter was a momentous one for Tronc (NASDAQ: TRNC), the owner of the Chicago Tribune, New York Daily News, Orlando Sentinel and other media properties. Among the second quarter highlights was a 3.9 percent increase in total revenue and 89 percent growth in digital-only subscribers, bringing total digital-only subscribers to 212,000 at the end of the second quarter.

Last week, Kaplan Test Prep and Cengage announced a new partnership, bringing free test prep and live academic support to Cengage Unlimited subscribers. At the outset of the partnership, the test prep offerings include GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, DAT and Praxis. In addition, Cengage Unlimited subscribers will get free access to Kaplan’s HelpSuite, giving them academic support for physics, chemistry and organic chemistry.
