On Monday, Signal Snowboards of Orange County, California made history by launching the first-ever snowboard subscription, reports Transworld Snowboarding. Dubbed the Signal Subscription Service (SSS), the new service allows snowboarders to buy new snowboards at an affordable monthly rate while also becoming part of an online snowboarding community.

“Your job is to go shred. Our job is to deliver unique experiences along with the ultimate access to snowboards and snowboard culture monthly, right to your door,” says Signal Snowboards in their launch video.

Subscribers choose a new snowboard, sign up and pay their monthly subscription fee, starting as low as $35 a month. Subscriptions include a Signal Care warranty which provides tip-to-tail coverage for damage to snowboards. Members will receive their new boards within a week of placing their orders and, once a year, they’ll get a new snowboard at the beginning of each winter season.

In addition, subscribers get access to the MOD program – a members-only demo program that lets subscribers try new boards in the line two weeks a year at no additional cost. Additional demos can be purchased for $40 each.

“We love snowboarding and want to see the sport continue to grow and flourish with the changing retail landscape. We have created a direct online platform that allows snowboarders – both new and old – to easily buy a quality USA-made snowboard for the cost of a dinner out or a few beers a month,” said Signal Founder Dave Lee.

“It also gives subscribers a direct line to us and our brand. We want them to feel totally taken care of. In addition to providing the best boards at the best price, we are building an online community of snowboarders,” Lee added.

Snowboards start at $35 a month for the Park model and range up to the Omni which is available for $55 a month. Boards can also be purchased for a one-time price. Park, for example, retails for $399. Omni sells for $599, but is currently sold out.

Transworld Snowboarding reports that Signal Subscription Service is just the first of a planned line of value-added snowboard programs available through Signal.

This is just the beginning,” said Lee. “We aim to expand our program to include affordable partnerships with ski resorts on lift tickets, unforgettable trips and other snow gear as well.”

Signal Snowboards’ website is powered by Shopify, a B2B online platform and payments provider for small to medium-sized companies.

Insider Take:

What a great idea! We love this. Signal is not only first company to offering this type of subscription service, but it is looking beyond the sale to really engage and relate to its customers. The company is providing access to a sometimes costly sport, making it more affordable and.

It is also building a community which will earn it long-term customer loyalty and referrals. If the company holds true to its customer service and quality “made in the USA” promise, this subscription product could, indeed, be a stepping stone to a much larger opportunity for Signal. We are excited to see where this takes them!
