During a press conference Saturday at EA Play 2018, Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: EA) announced the launch of Origin Access Premier, a new subscription for Windows-based PC games. Later this summer, EA gamers can join the new subscription tier to get early access to new EA releases including EA Sports Madden NFL 19, EA Sports FIFA 19, Battlefield V, Unravel Two and Anthem, along with 100+ PC games and a 10 percent discount on Origin digital purchases.

‘Millions of players have experienced the fun of playing more games through our subscription programs, and today we’re taking another groundbreaking step with Origin Access Premier,’ said Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson in a June 9 news release.

‘Origin Access Premier unlocks unprecedented levels of choice and value for players who love PC games. For the first time in a subscription, you’re getting new games like Madden NFL 19, FIFA 19, Battlefield V and Anthem, and full access to more than 100 games from EA and other publishers with a single membership. We’re thrilled to be opening up this new way for players to access great games, with the freedom to play what they want, whenever they want,’ Wilson added.

The new subscription service will be available for $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year, after a seven-day free trial. Gamers can sign up online to get news and updates about the launch via email. Unlike some gaming trials, Origin Access Premier will give gamers access to the full game for as long as they are members.

Members who currently subscribe to Origin Access will find their memberships converted to an Origin Access Basic membership, priced at $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year. This limits their trial of new games to ten hours, starting five days after a game’s release. Basic members will also get access to The Vault, a library of EA games. Premier members get access to a release five days before launch as long as they are members.

Though an exact launch date was not given, EA announced these dates for access to new games for Origin Access Premier members:

  • EA Sports Madden NFL 19: August 2, 2018
  • EA Sports FIFA 19: September 20, 2018
  • Battlefield V: October 11, 2018
  • Anthem: February 15, 2019

Players who are not currently members of Origin Access (Basic) can get a seven-day free trial through June 17 for any games in the Origin Access library. After the free trial, the current monthly or annual membership fee will be billed. Certain titles may not be included in the free trial; other limitations may apply. Details are available at Origin.com.

For fiscal year 2018, EA reported GAAP net revenue of $5.2 billion and more than 300 million registered players around the world.

‘Electronic Arts had another record year,’ said COO and CFO Blake Jorgensen in a May 8 earnings report. ‘Our success is driven by the way we have changed, and continue to change, our relationship with players. They want more depth in their favorite games, and fresh content that can hold their attention year-round. This has made our business much more stable and enabled us to deliver a dependable and growing cash flow to investors.’

The company is projecting net revenue for fiscal year 2019, ending March 31, 2019, of $5.6 billion and net income of $1.108 billion, or $3.55 diluted earnings per share.

Insider Take:

Gaming subscriptions are growing in popularity, and EA has found a way to participate in a way that subscribers seem to love. The company took the success of the Basic subscription and built on it, giving gamers what they want – full, early access to new games. At an affordable price – $14.99 a month or $99.99 per year – gamers get access to new games as well as 100+ games in The Vault. This is a great way for players who don’t want to buy a game to access many games and to only buy the games they want to keep. Kudos to EA for taking the time to test a subscription product and then expanding on its success to bring added value to subscribers.
