By 2015, more U.S. Internet users will access the web through mobile devices than through PCs or other wireline devices, according to the latest International Data Corporation Worldwide New Media Market Model Forecast. The company “forecasts that the impact of smartphone and, especially, media tablet adoption will be so great that the number of users accessing the Internet through PCs will first stagnate and then slowly decline. Western Europe and Japan will not be far behind the U.S. in following this trend.”What does this mean for paywall site publishers?
- Your web site should be optimized for each and every mobile device. The way your homepage appears on each of these devices will matter more than how it looks on a laptop or PC.
- Mobile app development must be a priority and your paywall needs to translate to an app. How are you going to handle app subscriptions on various devices?
- Create more e-books. Many of those mobile devices are either e-readers or have built in e-readers. How are you going to present longer content to your audience?
- On the flip side, will some of your mobile content need to be short and sweet and easy to read on the run? This is another facet of the mobile-centric publishing approach.
