Online Publishers: Does It Make Sense to Segment Your Social Media?

A post on All Things Digital today about their new social media program got me thinking. While segmenting social media isn’t a new idea (for example, you can follow specific sections of a newspaper like @NYTimesTravel on Twitter), I love the way All Things Digital presents their new social media options. Just like with a segmented email list, you can choose the topics you are most interested in. Is this something that might work for your readers?

All Things Digital is using Social Flow to optimize their Twitter content. This service “listens for when the followers of a Twitter account are active, and chooses to tweet the posts that are best.” It sometimes holds back content, especially that published in off-hours so that it can be tweeted when more followers are actually engaging. Something worth watching!
