The New York Times has signed up more digital subscribers in less time The Times (UK) and its growth is steep, according to an analysis by PaidContent.co.uk. The New York Times and The Times each introduced online charges in March 2011 and summer 2010 respectively. Why is the New York newspaper faring so much better? A few reasons:

  • Free Story Allowance: As PaidContent puts it, NYTimes.com’s paid content strategy is “a softer, more porous on-ramp than The Times‘” NYT readers are allowed a number of free stories before being asked to pay.
  • Different Market Sizes: The U.S. is bigger than the U.K. and The New York Times has done well at attracting international subscribers which now make up 12% of digital subscribers.
