Amazon Prime Day Returns July 11 and 12, 2023

Prime members save big and get access to exclusive deals and pricing during this annual two-day event

Amazon plans to reward its Prime members with their own special shopping days. This year’s event is set for July 11-12, 2023, starting at 3 a.m. Eastern July 11. This annual two-day event offers big savings for those willing to pay for the privilege of being an Amazon Prime member. In addition to big discounts on products from Peloton, Bose, Victoria’s Secret, YETI and Sony, members get access to exclusive deals, including new deals every 30 minutes, and the lowest prices of the year on certain brands.

“Prime Day is all about making our Prime members feel like a big deal, with deep savings and access to some of the best offers from brands they love,” said Jamil Ghani, vice president of Amazon Prime, in a June 20, news release. “With invite-only deals, we’re adding more value to the Prime experience and have made it easier for our Prime members to access exclusive doorbuster deals at incredible prices without waiting in line.”

On July 11, Prime Day is available in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the US and the UK. Amazon Prime members in India will have their own Prime Day later this summer.

Shop early, shop often

The focus of the event is July 11 and 12, but Amazon is building up to the big event with early savings on Amazon devices and products from Ruggable, quip, Madison Reed, Balanced Tiger, Anker, Wyze and AllKem Beauty. Amazon is also reminding shoppers that this is a great time to get in on back-to-school and off-to-college purchases.

Shopping highlights

Highlights for Amazon Prime Day include:

  • From June 29 through July 26, Prime members can get a $200 Amazon gift card when approved for a Prime Visa card, which includes 5% cashback on purchases from Amazon, Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods.
  • Prime members get exclusive access to Prime Video and Amazon Music deals, including discounts on movie rentals and special pricing on subscription streaming channels. Some are priced at $0.99 a month for up to two months, and new subscribers can get 50% off AMC+ and Paramount+.
  • Amazon is also offering an Amazon Music Unlimited and MGM+ bundle for $0.99 a month for three months.
  • A wide range of Amazon devices are on sale, including Alexa-enable devices including the Echo Show 5, Echo Pop, Echo Glow, Ring bundles, eero mesh WiFi, and Blink Outdoor.
  • Leveraging popular influencers, Amazon is sharing recommendations from Marianna Hewitt, Whitney Port, Tayshia Adams and Rocky Barnes, and celebrities Lola Tung, Christopher Briney and Gavin Casalegno are offering livestreams during the shopping event.

A good time to try Amazon Prime

Of course, Amazon isn’t hosting Prime Day out of the goodness of their hearts, though it is an effective sales tool. They hope to attract new Amazon Prime members who want to get in on the savings. Some will churn before the free trial period ends, but Amazon is banking on the fact that most won’t. They hope the members enjoy all that Prime membership has to offer – faster shipping, Prime Video, exclusive Prime Day and holiday shopping deals, photo storage and other perks.

Global reach of Amazon Prime

Amazon has more than 200 million paid Prime members in 25 countries. In the US, an Amazon Prime membership is available for $139 a year or $14.99, after a free 30-day trial. Student pricing is $69 a year or $7.49 a month, and recipients of qualifying government assistance programs can get Prime for $6.99 a month.

Amazon hosted its first Prime Day in 2015 as a way to celebrate Amazon’s 20th birthday. The massive sales event has been held annually ever since, even during the pandemic when Amazon hosted Prime Day in the fall. Last year, the Prime Day was available to Prime members in 20 countries, who purchased more than 300 million items globally, saving those customers over $1.7 billion. Prime members in the US bought more than 60,000 items per minute.

Insider Take

For shoppers, this event is a great opportunity to try a Prime membership. For Amazon, it is a chance to build long-term relationships with their members. Of course, Amazon hopes to grow their membership base, but the company also wants to grow their recurring revenue base. Prime Day offers discounts on streaming subscriptions and products that have a subscription component (e.g., Blink, eero, Peloton), helping to achieve that goals. Prime Day gets new members in the door, and Amazon hopes to keep them long after the shopping event is over.
