The 67-year-old, satirical Mad Magazine will no longer publish new content following issue #10, due out this fall. Only year-end issues and Mad books and special collections will contain original content going forward, reports ABC News. Starting with issue #11, the magazine will include classic, best-of and popular past content with new magazine covers and will be available in comic stores or via subscription only. Mad Magazine will no longer be available at newsstands.

Best known for its mascot, the freckle-faced Alfred E. Neuman, the magazine was started in 1952 and had published 550 issues prior to its 2018 reboot. Since then, it has published nine issues. At the height of its popularity, the magazine had 2.8 million subscribers. In 2017, it was down to 140,000 subscribers.

Mad Magazine currently sells annual subscriptions (six magazines per year) for $19.99, two-year subscriptions (six magazines per year for two years) for $29.99 and three-year subscriptions (six magazines per year for three years) plus a bonus book featuring President Trump for $44.99. It is not known how these subscription prices will change as the magazine limits new content.

Weird Al Yankovic, who had a brief stint as a guest editor at Mad Magazine, was among those who took to Twitter to express their sadness at the magazines demise.

Insider Take:

Unfortunately, being beloved and profoundly popular are not always enough to support publishing organizations. Mad Magazine is just the latest in a long string of publications – print and digital – that found the traditional model unsustainable. We hope their audience will remain loyal and support their special editions.
