Amazon’s Ring Increases ‘Ring Protect’ Pricing by 25% for Basic Plan

The popular home security service, Ring, will adjust its monthly and annual subscription fees for its Basic Ring Protect Plan starting March 2024 to enhance features and maintain service quality.

In a move set to take effect on March 11, 2024, Amazon’s Ring has announced a price increase for its Ring Protect Basic subscription, marking a shift from the existing USD $3.99 monthly (or USD $39.99 annually) to USD $4.99 monthly (or USD $49.99 annually), plus applicable sales tax, a 25% price increase aimed at aligning with the evolving market dynamics and operational needs.

Known for its video doorbells, security cameras, and alarm systems, Ring addresses the rising consumer demand for reliable home safety and convenience with its innovative, user-friendly technology. The surge in market demand for reliable home security solutions has seen Ring’s products become increasingly integral to everyday safety measures, reflecting the brand’s growing influence and market share.

As Ring continues to expand its reach, it continues to lead in integrating features such as motion detection, two-way communication, and seamless integration with Amazon Alexa. The affordability and essential services offered by the Ring Protect Basic plan, like video recording and sharing, have made it a favorite among consumers, addressing key aspects of contemporary home security.

Ring Protect

Ring Protect is a subscription-based service offered by Ring, designed to enhance the functionality of its smart home security products. This service differs from Ring’s standard offerings, which include hardware like video doorbells, security cameras, and alarm systems, by providing additional features such as video recording, sharing, and professional monitoring, depending on the plan.

Without a Ring Protect plan, Ring devices only offer live view capabilities, meaning you can see real-time footage but cannot record or share it. With Ring Protect, users can record, review, and share video clips from their Ring devices. This is particularly useful for capturing evidence of theft, vandalism, or other incidents.

Ring Protect Subscription Plans as of Feb. 14, 2024, before the Ring Protect Basic Plan price increase.

Ring Product Offerings:

  • Standard Ring Offerings: These include the hardware products themselves, such as the Ring Doorbell, Floodlight Cam, Stick Up Cam, and others. They provide basic functions like live video feed, motion alerts, and two-way talk without a subscription.
  • Ring Protect Basic Subscription: This plan is designed for individual Ring devices, enhancing their capabilities with video recording, reviewing, and sharing features.

  • Ring Protect Plus Subscription: This plan covers all devices at a single location, offering video recording for an unlimited number of Ring devices, extended warranties, and 10% off select products at Ring.com, in addition to the benefits provided by the Basic plan. It also includes 24/7 professional monitoring if you have a Ring Alarm.

  • Ring Protect Pro Subscription: Available in certain regions, this top-tier plan includes all the benefits of the Plus plan along with additional features like Ring Edge (local video storage), Alexa Guard Plus integration, and more, depending on the region.

While Ring’s hardware offerings provide the necessary tools for home security and smart home integration, the Ring Protect subscription plans enhance these tools by adding vital services such as video recording, professional monitoring, and extended device warranties, thereby offering a more comprehensive security solution. The price increase is only impacting the Basic Plan.

Rolling Out the Price Increase

Ring’s existing Basic Plan subscribers will be impacted differently based on their renewal dates, with those renewing post-March 11, 2024, facing the updated pricing. Ring has provided avenues for plan adjustments and emphasized the importance of understanding the terms, especially regarding video history retention and alarm system functionalities.

The company in its announcement, assured customers that this price increase is part of a broader strategy to enhance service value and maintain its commitment to user security and satisfaction.

INSIDER TAKE

The impending price increase for Ring aims to balance operational sustainability with customer value. While the adjustment may raise initial concerns among consumers, the overarching goal remains clear: to uphold and advance the standard of home security in an ever-evolving smart device landscape. Ring’s approach reflects a calculated strategy to stay ahead in a competitive market, emphasizing the importance of innovation, customer service, and comprehensive security solutions.
