Uber, best known for its ride sharing service, is testing a new subscription that bundles all of its services together – ride sharing, food delivery, and scooter and bike rides. At launch, Uber is piloting the subscription program in Chicago and San Francisco for $24.99 a month, says TechCrunch. The tests will include different versions of the program in each city, but the subscriptions will include price protection on each Uber ride, free delivery from Uber Eats, and free JUMP rides on Uber bikes and scooters, according to TechCrunch.

The media outlet also reports that Uber is testing other subscription passes along with discounted rides and free food delivery. Uber did not confirm details of the exact testing, but a spokesperson told TechCrunch, From meals to wheels and everything in between, were always looking for ways to make Uber the go-to option for your everyday needs.

This is not Ubers first pass at subscription services. In 2016, Uber tested a subscription-based Uber Plus service in six cities. Uber said it was a limited beta test. In the selected cities, subscribers would pay a flat fee each month in exchange for a certain number of UberX and UberPOOL rides. The service didnt take off, and Uber shut it down quietly.

In January 2018, Uber Eats considered a subscription service in the U.K. Through that subscription program, customers could save on Uber Eats delivery fees and get access to special promotions and exclusive menus. Last October, Uber launched Ride Pass, pictured below. For $24.99 a month, frequent riders could consistently pay lower prices regardless of traffic, weather or time of day. It is only available in certain cities and, for a limited time, subscribers could also get free JUMP bike and scooter rides.

In May 2019, Uber began testing the food delivery subscription service in the U.S. For $9.99 a month, Uber Eats would give subscribers free unlimited food delivery. Uber did not officially announce the existence of this service, but TechCrunch discovered it through reverse-engineering specialist Jane Manchun Wong.

Insider Take:

While Uber has tested various subscription options in the past, this is the first time it has bundled all of its services together. This seems to be a bit of an odd play. Each of their services is so different, that it seems that each service could possibly appeal to different audiences. There doesnt seem to be a one-size-fits-all package or price that would fit everyones needs. For example, someone who orders food delivery regularly might not need Uber rides, but just prefers not to go out after a long commute home.

Like a lot of Ubers business decisions, this one doesnt seem to be well thought out. Uber seems to throw ideas at the wall to see what sticks. To be fair, we are only hearing limited details. Uber might very well have a solid strategy for testing, tweaking and expanding its subscription plans; we just arent privy to them. Well reserve judgment until the company shares more details and data.
