Whether you’re looking for a car for an hour or a day, Toyota’s new Hui round-trip, station-based car sharing membership service has you covered. Members get access to Hui’s fully-loaded Toyota and Lexus by reserving them through a smartphone app and picking them up at a designated location. For now, Hui is available exclusively in Hawaii at more than 20 pick-up and drop-off locations in Honolulu. The car sharing program is a joint venture between Toyota and Servco Pacific, Toyota’s new car distributor in Hawaii.

At launch, pricing varies depending on the vehicle selected. Hui offers three options:

  • For the Escape – Prius and Prius Prime for $9.95 per hour or $79.60 per day
  • For the Thrill – Camry XSE for $13.95 per hour or $111.60 per day
  • For the Personal Treat – Lexus RX, RX F Sport and RXL for $19.95 per hour or $159.60 per day

Prices includes gas, insurance, taxes, maintenance, cleaning, parking and 24/7 roadside assistance and customer service. There is no application fee, and there are mileage restrictions or limitations. All new Hui users will be automatically enrolled in the company’s ELITE membership plan which charges a monthly fee of $14.95 for the service. The fee is waived for the first three months after launch. Later this year, Hui will introduce a pay-as-you-go FREEDOM membership plan which won’t charge a monthly fee but will charge higher rates.

“Accessibility, convenience and reliability are key pillars of our Hui service, so we will continue to add more stations throughout Oahu with the help of our private and public mobility partners,” said Peter Fukunaga, director of Hui, in a statement. “We are also open to expanding our service to Neighbor Island residents and interisland travelers as well.”

“With Hui, everything can be done through the Hui app. From booking to drop off, our members never have to talk to anyone, unless they want to, of course,” added Fukanaga. “Hui is an amenity designed to complement bike share, public transportation, ride share and other existing mobility options.”

To get started, a prospective member downloads the iOS or Android Hui app and applies for membership. To qualify, U.S. driver’s license holders must be at least 19 years old, have had a valid license for the past 18 months with no major moving violations like a DUI in the past 36 months and fewer than three minor moving violations in the past 18 months. International driver’s license holders must be at least 25 and meet the other requirements as specified for U.S. driver’s license holders. Approvals take about 5 minutes.

Once approved, members can locate and reserve available vehicles through the app. When the reservation is active, a digital key is sent to the member’s smartphone. The member will connect to the vehicle via Bluetooth, allowing them to unlock and use all functions of the vehicle. Essentially, the member’s smartphone becomes the key to the car using Smart Key Box technology. Once finished with the vehicle, the member returns the vehicle to the same spot where it was picked up, and the member will be billed accordingly. Cars should be returned with at least a quarter tank of gas.

Insider Take:

You know we love innovation, and we love this concept! It gives drivers the option of getting easy access to a vehicle without the hassle of ownership or monthly leasing or car payments or renting a car the traditional way. Through the car share program, members can rent a vehicle for a few hours for a special event or for a weekend getaway, giving them freedom without the big price tag. With all-inclusive pricing, including gas, Hui is offering a new type of car share program that could work for any number of situations – a vehicle available during vacation, a second car for the day, a vehicle for a student traveling across the island or an impromptu day trip in a reliable – and more fun – vehicle! We love this idea and hope Hui considers bringing this to other markets if it experiences success with its initial testing period.
