Ring is reimagining home security and making it affordable for people to protect their homes with their new subscription service, Protect. The company announced the launch of Protect Sunday. Protect is a do-it-yourself home security system that works in conjunction with Ring’s video doorbells and security cameras. The system is customizable and can be expanded to fit any home or apartment. Priced at $10 a month, or $100 a year, Ring Protect does not have hidden fees or long-term contracts.

Subscribers start by purchasing a Ring Protect bundle, beginning at $199. The lowest priced bundle includes:

  • A keypad to activate and deactivate the system
  • A base station
  • A contact sensor for a window or door
  • An infrared motion detector
  • A Z-wave extender to extend the range within a subscriber’s home
  • A backup battery and optional cellular backup

With their Protect subscription, users receive instant mobile alerts when doors or windows are opened or when motion is detected inside your home. Each Protect bundle also includes 24/7 professional monitoring and unlimited camera storage. Currently, Protect bundles are only available for pre-order in the U.S. and Canada, but they are expected to be shipped in November 2017.

‘When integrated with our powerful, easy-to-use Ring Doorbells and Cams, Ring Protect creates a stronger-than-ever Ring of Security that helps secure our Neighbors’ homes, both inside and out, to further reduce and prevent neighborhood crime,’ said Jamie Siminoff, chief inventor and founder of Ring, said in the October 1 announcement.

‘Our mission ‘To Reduce Crime in Neighborhoods’ guides us in everything we do here at Ring,’ Siminoff added. ‘Ring Protect not only is a new and innovative take on home security, but its affordability truly opens up full home security, with professional monitoring, to the masses, further driving our mission forward.’

Ring Protect is the latest subscription product for Ring customers. The company also offers a Basic Plan which is $3 a month, or $30 per year, per camera. This subscription includes cloud storage on all videos for up to 60 days, video review for missed alerts, and video sharing to share videos with friends, family or law enforcement.

Protect Plus, the new plan, has those features too, but it also includes unlimited video doorbells and security cameras for one price ($10 a month, or $100 a year), a 10 percent discount off all Ring devices purchased at Ring.com, a lifetime warranty, 24-7 professional monitoring and cellular backup so subscribers’ homes are protected even when the internet goes down. The monitoring and backup are only available to subscribers who use the Protect base station from the Protect bundle.

For now, Protect integrates with all of Ring’s own products, but it will be rolling out support to integrate third-party connected devices in the future, says TechCrunch.

Ring’s announcement comes just 10 days after home security company Nest announced the launch of Secure, an alarm system that includes three products: its Nest Guard (the alarm system’s hub), Nest Tag (a chip to turn alarms on and off) and Nest Detect (sensors) products. Nest also offers smart home tools like thermostats, cameras, doorbells, and smoke and CO alarms. The Nest Secure system starter pack is priced at $499 and is only available for pre-order. The product is expected to ship in November.

Insider Take:

As someone who has looked into home security systems recently, I admit I’m impressed by Ring’s new offering. Its Protect bundle is affordable, and the idea of 24/7 home security monitoring for only $10 a month (or $100 a year) is very attractive. Other services offer home security products but at a higher price point, and some of the services also have additional fees. Ring has made it easy and affordable for anyone to install their own home security system. Though this new service isn’t available yet, I’m ready to sign up.
