When you get tired of playing Super Mario Odyssey, Zelda or FIFA 18 on your Nintendo Switch gaming console, you can now ‘switch’ over to Hulu to watch streaming video instead, reports Fortune. Last Thursday Hulu announced the news, becoming the first streaming video app to be made available on the gaming console. Switch owners can download the streaming video app from the eShop for free, but they must subscribe to Hulu to be able to use the service.

Both of Hulu’s streaming video subscription services will be available on the Switch gaming consoles. The original, on-demand Hulu subscription service, which features thousands of TV classics, series, movies, current episodes, family shows and original programming, is available for $7.99 a month for the limited commercials plan and $11.99 a month for the no commercials plan.

Hulu’s newer, live-streaming service is $39.99 a month. It includes access to all of Hulu’s on-demand content as well as a skinny bundle that includes live news and 50+ broadcast and cable TV networks including ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, A&E, CNN, HGTV, FX, TNT, ESPN and USA, and feature add-ons like an enhanced cloud DVR with 50 hours of free storage and the ability to watch up to three screens at a time. Subscribers to Hulu Live TV can also add premium services like HBO for $14.99 a month, Cinemax for $9.99 a month, or Showtime for $8.99 a month.

As Fortune points out, offering the Hulu app on the Nintendo Switch allows the gaming console to compete with other systems like PlayStation 4 and Xbox One which are far ahead of the game. PlayStation, for example, offers dozens of apps including streaming music and video apps like Tubi TV, Sirius XM, CBS All Access, HBO Now, Twitch, iHeart Radio, HBO Go, PlayStation Vue, WWE Network, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Crunchyroll and Netflix.

Xbox One has a good selection of apps too, including Spotify, Netflix, Sling, EA Access Hub, YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Pandora, SoundCloud, iHeart Radio, Showtime and Showtime Anytime.

The timing for the partnership between Nintendo and Switch and Hulu is ideal with the holidays just around the corner. If someone was considering Switch as a gift, but wanted something more than just a gaming console, they might be satisfied with the streaming options offered Hulu, with the hope that Nintendo would add other apps later.

This may also soothe anxious Nintendo Switch gamers who have been anxiously waiting for the Switch subscription which has been promised for months. The latest news on that offering is that Nintendo will launch a Switch subscription in 2018 to customers in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Subscribers will be able to download a collection of classic games like Super Mario Bros. 3, Balloon Fight and Dr. Mario and get discounts on digital games and content. Pricing, which is subject to change, is currently set at $3.99 for a one-month subscription, $7.99 for a three-month subscription, and $19.99 for a 12-month subscription.

Insider Take:

We always like seeing companies add value to their products and services without additional cost. As with other gaming consoles, Nintendo is making the Hulu app available on the console, but users still have to subscribe to access Hulu programming. Unfortunately, Nintendo is way behind what PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are offering. While we like the value-added, we don’t think it is enough to sway a customer to choose Nintendo Switch over another gaming system. Nintendo might be better off focusing on what they’ve already promised and announcing apps like Hulu later.
