Table of Contents have been shown to improve performance and engagement with newsletters, so paidContent was smart to include a list of headlines at the top of their newsletter. In addition, the subject line highlights three headlines, a tactic known to increase open rates (see our How-To on Email Marketing Basics for more on this).

But then the site compromises performance of its table of content by embedding anchor links in the text that jump the viewer from the table of contents to the summary in the same newsletter instead of to the actual article.

If your newsletter readers click on a headline, it’s because they want to read the article, not the summary. So do yourself a favor and make sure every headline in your newsletter links back to your website.
