theSkimm is a great resource for the person who seeks to be informed, but, like most of us, has neither the time or attention span to consume large quantities of news copy. Think of it as an evolution of Sparknotes – just the facts, Jack– all presented in a daily email newsletter where the content is quick and snappy and directed primarily toward women.
Subscribing is free and easy – just enter your email address. We wonder aloud if they will ever split their offering into a smaller, free version and a larger paid version. In the meantime, it this particular email caught our eye as it reaches out to new subscribers. Here’s what we liked about it:
1. We like how this is coming directly from the founders – with a down-to-earth appeal that as a startup, they are still interested in feedback. However, we would recommend personalizing the email instead of the generic greeting used here.
2. The reader is encouraged to share the site with others. theSkimm provides a unique sharing link to be copied into emails or social media just in case the sharing tool doesn’t work.
3. We love the “ask” for 5 shares because of the old dictum: “if you don’t ask you don’t get.” However, even with all this great sharing, they did not highlight why exactly someone would or should share – we encourage our INSIDER members to not forget the benefit copy. Here we don’t know what will happen if we share. Are we getting points, presents, more news, etc?
4. Overall we love the short and to the point email – it matches their pithy editorial style.
