Self-professed nerds and geeks can now get their fill of shows from digital publishers Nerdist and Geek & Sundry, thanks to movie studio Legendary Digital Networks (LDN). Legendary, who has produced films like “Warcraft,” “Jurassic World” and the “Dark Night” series, is launching a streaming subscription app called Alpha.

Starting November 3, for $4.99 a month, subscribers will get 15 to 20 hours of new programming from Nerdist and Geek & Sundry, including episodes of “CriticalRole” and “TableTop,” reports Digiday.

Hosted by Wil Wheaton of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and “Stand By Me” fame, on “TableTop,” guest stars come on the show to play board and card games with Wheaton. The show previously ran on YouTube’s Geek & Sundry channel, but it will move to Alpha for its fourth season, reports Tubefilter.

Hoping to appeal to a specific audience of geeks, gamers and fans of pop culture, Alpha is adding new shows including “Escape,” an unscripted series hosted by Janet Varney in which celebrity guests are locked into rooms where they have to solve puzzles in order to escape. Other new shows include:

  • “Sidekick with Matt Mira” from Nerdist
  • “Vast”
  • “Majority Rules,” a weekly live game show where audience members are randomly selected to play mini-games
  • “Choose Our Destiny: Improv Adventure,” featuring The Tin Can Brothers
  • “Public Access” where members of the Nerdist and Geek & Sundry communities can host their own show

Additional titles will be announced monthly. Digiday reports that the Alpha platform may also offer feature films at some point.

While Alpha doesn’t officially launch until November 3, those eager to check out the new subscription app can sign up for early access. Those selected to get a sneak peek will receive an email invitation.

In a press release announcing Alpha, Legendary explains the concept:

“Alpha is the new premium content platform from Legendary Digital Networks that allows fans to interact with feature channels and personalities to form immersive communities around their passions. Alpha’s fully interactive channels include Nerdist Alpha, which features exclusive content from the genre and popular culture experts at Nerdist, as well as Geek & Sundry Alpha, offering specially curated content from the award-winning geek culture and lifestyle authorities at Geek & Sundry. Alpha bridges the gap between the audience and content through special features including original programming, chat, polling, and live fan experiences,” says LDN.

In addition to programming, Alpha subscribers will get online and offline perks, including access to members-only events, exclusive early access to certain programing, product discounts, prizes and more.

According to Digiday, Legendary has been funded through advertising, sponsorships and crowdfunding to date. In fact, Geek & Sundry has raised $1.4 million on Idiegogo for season 3 of “TableTop” from more than 22,000 fans, far exceeding their original goal of $500,000, says Digiday. Adding a subscription component, however, creates a recurring revenue stream, making projects more sustainable.

“Ultimately, this is more about membership and creating a community hub than simply putting all of our content behind a wall,” said LDN president Adam Ryder in an interview with Digiday.

Insider Take:

This is an interesting take on the streaming app idea. LDN is creating a subscription product with multiple goals. In addition to creating a recurring revenue stream to help it become more sustainable, Alpha is offering shows that are proven fan favorites like “TableTop,” offering original programming tailored to specific audiences, and experimenting with more interactive entertainment, all in one product at a competitive price.

Add online and offline perks and exclusive early access to programming while building a community, and Legendary has created a unique subscription app that is sure to have mass appeal. By promoting the launch early and offering sneak peeks to a select audience, Legendary is also building excitement for the product and getting a month or so to work out any problems before the official launch. This promotional strategy and soft launch will help Alpha start out strong.
