Since Microsoft announced their intention to acquire Activision Blizzard in a $69 billion all-cash deal, the game developer has been in the headlines. Regulators in the U.S. and abroad have fought against the billion-dollar deal, but Microsoft continues to make concessions to encourage regulators to soften their stance. Just last week, Microsoft announced two 10-year deals that they hope will appease regulators: offering to share Call of Duty with Nintendo and another deal that will bring Xbox PC games to NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW cloud gaming service
As Microsoft and regulators dance around the antitrust issues, this STAT PACK from Activision Blizzard is particularly timely, and it is fascinating. For example, in fiscal year 2021, Nintendo had 57.2% of the non-digital video game market and 42.8% of the digital video game market. For fiscal year 2020, Activision Blizzard had 17.7% of the non-digital video game market and 82.3% of the digital video game market. Activision Blizzard’s net revenue for 2021 was $8.8 billion and net income of $2.7 billion. Activision on its own made $3.5 billion in 2021. In the first quarter of 2022, Activision had average monthly users of 100 million. No wonder Microsoft wants to acquire it.
