Digital newsstand service Magzter this week introduced Magzter Gold, which grants subscribers access to unlimited reading of over 2,000 titles out of an estimated 5,000 total.

The subscription price for Gold per month is $9.99 for unlimited access. Also offered is a limited access subscription to Gold Lite of $4.99 per month for access to any five titles that are part of the program.

Founded in 2011, Magzter’s business model has been to sell single issues or annual subscriptions. But now Magzter is getting into the game of all-you-can-eat digital consumption, following the likes of Neflix and Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited.

Vijay Radhakrishnan, Magzter President & Co-Founder said: “With thousands of titles available, content discovery is a huge benefit of the digital reading experience on Magzter. To take full advantage of that, we’ve built a leading-edge recommendation engine to power the back-end of our new user interface.”

Magzter joins other digital newsstand services such as Next Issue and Zinio in offering unlimited digital consumption of magazines. The site also just recently released MagEnhance, which makes digital magazines far more interactive with tools like rich text, links, slideshows, video, audio, animation, music, email, and more.

Insider Take:

This new offering from Magzter reflects the reality that magazine publishers need to be aggressive at increasing their overall subscription revenue, no matter how incrementally small of an increase that is. Worldwide magazine industry revenue has been falling since 2010 and digital consumption of magazines remains 3.8% of total U.S. circulation, according to the Alliance for Audited Media. Time will tell if this new offering will have an effect on Magzter’s overall subscription numbers and revenue, their customer’s revenues, as well as digital consumption of magazines as a whole. We’ll certainly be paying attention to this one.
