These days everyone is storing files in the cloud, whether they’re backing up smartphone data or uploading documents to Dropbox, Slack of Google Drive. Earlier this week, Google upped its cloud storage game with the launch of Google One, a simple, cloud-based storage solution for consumers, that will replace Google Drive. Under the new product, subscribers will manage their files through a Google One app, reports CNET.

Users who use a paid version of Google Drive will automatically be upgraded to Google One in the next couple of months, starting in the U.S. and then globally. Later this year, Google One will be available to other users, the company says. Subscribers to G Suite won’t be affected.

‘With Google One, we’ve upgraded our paid storage plans, so you’ll have all the space you need for your Google Drive, Gmail, and original quality photos and videos in Google Photos. With lots of options, ranging from 100 GB to 30 TB, you can choose the plan that’s right for you,’ said Pavni Diwanji, vice president of Google One, in a May 14 blog post.

  • Extras from other Google products
  • Credits on Google Play
  • Special deals and promotions via Google Search

Utilizing the freemium model, Google is offering a number of Google One subscription options:

  • 15 GB – free
  • 100 GB – $1.99 a month
  • 1 TB – $9.99 a month (Google says this is its most popular plan.)
  • 10 TB – $99.99 a month
  • 20 TB – $199.99 a month
  • 30 TB – $299.99 a month

Also this week, Google launched a new version of its AI-fueled News app for iOS in 127 countries. The goal with the new app is to provide a customized experience for each user, reports TechCrunch. Sections in the new app include For You, Headlines, Favorites and Newsstand, an article aggregator. According to TechCrunch, a new feature to watch for is the new Subscribe with Google, which will let publications sell subscriptions to readers.

Insider Take:

Much like Facebook, Google is always looking for the next big thing to help it compete against other big tech companies. In this case, Google is revamping its Drive storage offering in favor of storage plans which make sense. This would be a way for Google to transition to a new product while securing some recurring revenue to fund its other operations. We’ll provide updates as the rollout of Google One continues throughout the year.
