At this week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, HTC Vive announced a big upgrade to its Viveport VR subscription service. Starting April 5, which is Vive Day, Viveport will offer Viveport Infinity which will give subscribers unlimited access to its catalog of more than 500 virtual reality titles. With the existing subscription service, subscribers can only access five apps and games per month, including titles like Vestige, Time Carnage, AnimVR, Slightly Heroes and The Wizards from a variety of genres, including 360° video, action, adventure, business, comedy, creativity, health care, sports, music and education.

“Today, we’re announcing our next step in Viveport’s evolution with Viveport Infinity” said Viveport president Rikard Steiber. “When we first launched our subscription service, we gave consumers the ability to try five titles a month. Now with Viveport Infinity, we’re offering our members the best value in VR content with 100x more choice, all at one low price.”

In this preview, Viveport staff explain that, with unlimited access, subscribers can try new genres and see that virtual reality goes beyond gaming. Users can meditate, create and learn from Viveport too.

“With Infinity, the sky’s the limit,” said Kris Sverson, senior manager of content acquisition.

In the video, Steiber explains that Viveport is a cross-platform service, so it works with different types and brands of VR hardware. This includes current and future Vive devices, Oculus Rift and other devices in the Wave Ecosystem. Steiber also shares that this new, unlimited service will be good for developers too because they’ll be able to grow their customer base and revenue. It turns out this is good for Viveport too. According to Steiber, they have found that subscribers spend 15 percent more exploring content outside their subscriptions than other users.

In a blog post about the new service, Vive says subscribers will save thousands of dollars on top-quality content, introducing them to new experiences. Following a free 14-day trial, Vive offers several Viveport subscription plans, ranging from $19.99 for a three-month plan to $79.99 for a 12-month plan. Vive has not yet disclosed the price for the new Viveport Infinity subscription. It is not clear if the Infinity subscription will replace all other subscription plans, or if this is an addition to the existing options.

Insider Take:

We love this new subscription service for several reasons! The company launched Viveport in 2017 and has been steadily growing its subscriber base. Now that they’ve got a following and virtual reality has grown in popularity, Viveport has a built-in fan base to market to. They’ve taken a service that they know works and expanded it, upgrading to an unlimited option. This benefits subscribers who can’t get enough VR and developers who can monetize their apps and games to a new audience. Last but not least, we love that Vive unveiled this new plan at CES – what better place to find a captive, engaged tech audience? By doing so, Vive is building the buzz early which will increase demand when Vive Day rolls around in early April.
