Last week LinkedIn announced new changes to its job postings to help job seekers find their next job. The professional social media platform will leverage existing information to help job seekers answer these questions:

  1. What connections (if any) do you have at the company?
  2. Does the company have a history of hiring people like you?
  3. Who will you work with if you get the job?

“The answers to these questions live within the LinkedIn network, and we are now surfacing these insights to help job seekers globally,” explained Vidya Chandra in the Dec. 15 announcement.

The changes are consistent with data gathered from a recent LinkedIn survey:

  • 89% of career builders networked while seeking their current job.
  • Of those who networked with former colleagues, 53% reported networking efforts helped them land their job.
  • Those who reached out to a former boss were 61% effective.

“The old adage, ‘It’s not what you know, it’s who you know’ holds true, so we’re showing your connections to a company front and center on job postings,” said Chandra.

Among the changes is a “Meet the Team” feature that shows job seekers which employees currently work at a specific company in a similar role. This will show prospective employees what types of skills, background and experience a company values in its current workforce.

Additional insights are available to premium subscribers, including an inside look at a specific company. Job seekers can learn more about a company’s growth rate, average tenure of existing employees, and top schools and companies that the company hires from. While this doesn’t give a complete picture of the company, it is valuable information to help job seekers find a company that might be a good fit for them.

According to Business Insider, these changes are being rolled out to users incrementally, so they may not be available to all LinkedIn users right away.

In related news, LinkedIn is discontinuing its Sales Plus subscription, reported Business2Community. It will be replaced with the Sales Navigator subscription which is basically a free account with a Sales Navigator overlay and price tag. Those with a Sales Plus subscription may lose some of their saved searches.

Insider Take:

In March 2015, we reported on LinkedIn’s recent revamping of its subscription packages. While we liked the clarity of the more clearly defined packages, LinkedIn has made a lot of changes in recent years, including revamped packages, redesigned mobile apps, a new inbox messaging experience and the acquisition of Lynda.com. While this could mean LinkedIn is sensitive to and poised to adapt to the market’s needs, to an extent, it seems like LinkedIn is throwing ideas at the wall to see what sticks.

In terms of premium subscription dollars, LinkedIn seems to be on the right track. At the end of its third quarter (Sept. 30, 2015), premium subscriptions had grown to $138 million, a 21% increase year-over-year. Subscriptions represent 18% of total revenue for the three months ended Sept. 20, 3015, versus 20% for the same period last year.
