Seeso, NBCUniversal’s comedy subscription service, officially launched this week, following a one-month, web-only trial. Unlike other over-the-top (OTT) streaming video services, Seeso is focused solely on comedies. Affordably priced at $3.99 a month, it is also ad free.

Seeso’s website said the site includes “an extensive collection of hand-picked comedy comprised of hilarious, never-before-seen originals, quotable classics, next-day TV, hours of stand-up specials, bingeable library shows” and more. The site boasts 2,000 hours of content at launch with new content added daily.

Some of the shows available include:

  • Next day airings of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Late Night with Seth Myers and Saturday Night Live
  • Stand-up comedy from Jay Pharoah, Wyatt Cenac and Big Jay Oakerson
  • Comedy series favorites like 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation, Saved by the Bell and The Office
  • Popular British comedies including The IT Crowd, Fawlty Towers, The Office (U.K.) and Monty Python
  • Originally programming, with new episodes each Thursday. Shows including The UCB Show with Amy Poehler, The Cyanide and Happiness Show, Dave & Ethan: Lovemakers, Sammy J & Randy in Ricketts Lane and Before the Morning After

The original shows will run new episodes every Thursday, more like a traditional network show than a streaming video service, says TechCrunch. While we enjoy binge-watching our favorite shows on Netflix and Hulu, we can see the benefits to having to return to Seeso each week to watch new episodes of the their original programming.

TechCrunch also reports that Seeso plans to experiment with live stand-up specials, similar to HBO and other paid channels. It tried this during the web-only beta test with The Guest List: Live from The Barrel House, and it has several other live specials planned. If successful, this offering is another way for Seeso to differentiate itself from other OTT services.

Visitors to the site can sign in as guests via email, Facebook or Twitter to see the library of options and view free clips, or subscribe for unlimited access to the entire streaming video library. The service can be accessed via the web, or its recently-launched iOS and Android apps.

The site is also well organized, including shows by category (series, late night, stand up, films, originals, British and animation), and it has a search feature so you can easily find what you’re looking for.

The site also has some handy features including parental controls and the ability to create your own playlists, so you can bookmark shows you want to watch later. You can also set the video player to auto-play or not.

Insider Take:

We love that the site has a clearly defined niche – comedy. Sure, you can get some of the shows on other streaming video services, but it is convenient to offer so many in one place. It could become the “go to” place for cord cutters who love comedy. We also love that you can get all 40 years of Saturday Night Live on Seeso! If you’re an SNL fan, that offering alone is worth the $3.99 a month.

Other features we like:

  • The site is well organized and easy to navigate.
  • Try before you buy. Guests can log in to see the library before subscribing, so you can see what you’re getting before laying your money down.
  • There are three viewing options – web, iOS and Android. Some services launch with only one or two options. This is a great way to get in front of as many potential subscribers as possible.
  • The price. If you can afford a smartphone, you can afford Seeso.
  • In addition to an extensive library of existing content, Seeso will draw subscribers with its original series like The UCB Show which stars comedy genius Amy Poehler.

If Seeso takes off, NBCUniversal will be laughing all the way to the bank.
