The sustained popularity of subscription box services shows the efficacy of the subscription model alongside a market that surprisingly exists for boxes of niche products. Since every box company sells a unique product in their own each registration process is different – so we took a look at how some of the most popular subscription boxes are registering their subscribers.

Dollar Shave Club

A pioneer in the subscription box economy, Dollar Shave Club offers razors for bargain-basement prices compared to what one would get in the supermarket.

The first page in the registration process:

  1. Presents customers with three options for razors with prices clearly marked.
  2. Gives humorous input on each product to go with the descriptions.
  3. Lets users learn more about the razors they have chosen, if they still haven’t decided yet.

The second page in the registration process:

  1. Attempts an up-sell by offering accessory products to place in the box.
  2. Luckily, a large orange button lets you skip this page easily.

The third page in the registration process:

  1. Contains fields for shipping information.
  2. Billing information comes next.
  3. Offers an up-sell for “optional travel add-ons.”
  4. Shows the total clearly on the page.

Barkbox

This company sends a monthly box for lovers of all sizes of pooch. The registration process is similar to that of Dollar Shave Club, but in four pages.

The first registration page:

  1. Subscribers are asked to specify what size dog they have.
  2. Down in the site links, there’s a box to enter an email address to join the Barkbox’s email list.

The second registration page:

  1. Has four subscription options, where the price-per-month falls as the time period rises.
  2. Barkbox takes this time to inform the subscriber that their plans will automatically renew, along with information about sales tax and shipping outside the United States.

The third registration page:

  1. Contains an up-sell to include a “premium” dog toy in the box – for the discerning canine in your life.

The fourth and final registration page:

  1. Asks for shipping info.
  2. Asks for billing info.
  3. Asks for credit card info.
  4. Lets you include your dog’s name and date of adoption.
  5. Interestingly, asks for a password as a final step in the process. However, we wonder what it will attach to since no email or username was given.

Graze

Graze is a box service that sends customized snacks to subscribers on a weekly basis. The three-step registration process is stripped down, clean, and simple.

The first registration page:

  1. Begins with an order summary and details the weekly price per box.
  2. Lets subscribers know up front that they can change or stop their orders at any time.
  3. Asks for a first and last name, email, and password to create an account.
  4. Asks if the subscriber has any allergies, a logical move considering what they sell.

The second registration page:

  1. Still contains the order information.
  2. Asks for a shipping address.

The third registration page:

  1. For the third time has the order summary
  2. Asks for credit card information.

INSIDER Take:

These three examples of registration pages show how different subscription box companies sell their products. There were elements of all three that we liked: Dollar Shave Club with its images, BarkBox with its simple and straightforward language, and Graze’s simple user interface and design. All three help visitors along the line to becoming subscribers with minimal clicks and hoops to jump through. All too often subscription box sites try to gather too much information before the sale is made. Better to get only the most pertinent information up front and let the customer provide further details once they are paying subscribers. All of the three examples use customer friendly language, something to certainly take into account as well.
