Rent the Runway is expanding, this time adding a standalone store in San Francisco, reports TechCrunch. This location will be in addition to stores in Woodland Hills, California; Washington, D.C.; Chicago; and its flagship store in New York City. The San Francisco store will be open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. The stores, of course, supplement the company’s successful fashion rentals and subscription services.

According to the store’s website, the San Francisco store will feature a rotating selection of sizes, 0 through 20, and styles perfect for work or weekend wear, as well as the latest accessories. Customers can book one-on-one styling appointments and reserve fitting rooms, return or pick-up orders, or shop for same-day rentals and reserve clothing for future use.

TechCrunch reports that Rent the Runway’s subscription plans make up about half of its revenue, with San Francisco being the third largest subscription market. Rent the Runway offers two different plans RTR Update and RTR Unlimited. The Update plan costs $89 a month (or $69 for trial members), and it gives members access to more than 350 brands. Members receive four new pieces for the month, along with one swap.

The Unlimited plan, which Rent the Runway says is its most popular plan, runs $159 a month (or $99 for trial members). Members get unlimited items and unlimited swaps as well as access to more than 475 brands. Other perks of membership include:

  • Constant access to designer clothing for every day wear or special occasions
  • Free two-day shipping to and from Rent the Runway
  • Free dry cleaning and rental insurance
  • 25 percent of all four-day reserve rentals
  • Members-only discounts to buy rentals
  • Ability to swap clothing at a Rent the Runway retail store
  • Member concierge to help with ordering
  • VIP content, exclusive previews and store events

Rent the Runway says that its members shop 89 percent less, saving time and money. Fifty-two percent of their members experiment with different styles, and 71 percent members find a new favorite designer when they sample different pieces.

Insider Take:

If you’ve ever said, “I don’t have a thing to wear,” Rent the Runway might be for you. While the business started out offering special occasion rentals, it has made a name for itself with its subscription offerings. It is a convenient way to refresh your wardrobe without spending a lot, and if you fall in love with a particular piece, you can always buy it – at a discount, if you’re a member.

What Rent the Runway has over subscription boxes like Stitch Fix is that you can choose the individual pieces you want to wear. There’s a lot of freedom in choosing items for yourself, especially with something so personal as style.
