Magzter Launches New Tool for Publishing Fully Interactive Digital Magazines

Magzter, a cross-platform digital magazine publishing tool, book store and newsstand, announced last week that it is releasing a significant upgrade to its self-service digital publishing product-line with MagEnhance. MagEnhance will not only convert magazines into a digital format like its existing products do today, it will make them fully interactive with tools like rich text, links, slideshows, video, audio, animation, music, email and more. This platform will create a much richer magazine experience for subscribers. Rather than simply reading magazines on their tablets or smartphones, subscribers will be able to enjoy a more robust reading experience. Here’s how it works. The new platform allows publishers to drag-and-drop features into the magazines without any coding. With easy-to-follow, online, MagEnhance tutorials, virtually anyone at a publishing company can create an interactive magazine. Once a publisher creates a magazine app with the MagEnhance tools, it can distribute the interactive magazines via Apple Newsstand, Google Play, Windows 8 devices, Nook and the Amazon app store. As an avid magazine reader, I am thrilled to hear this news. I subscribe to 15 or more magazines and pick up another five to 10 on newsstands each month. To date, I have yet to read one of my favorite magazines on my tablet or smartphone. It isn’t that I am a technophobe; in fact, I love technology, but the digital magazines I’ve seen don’t offer me much more than a paper copy which is easy to read and very portable. I’ve viewed a few digital magazines, and while they are as beautiful as their printed counterparts, they can be difficult to read and navigate.Magzter’s enhancements will change that. With more than 23 million users globally and 1,500 major publishers currently using its service to produce more than 4,000 magazines available via Apple’s Newsstand, the Kindle Store, and the Magzter digital magazine store, three-year-old Magzter is a already force in mobile publishing. What Magzter is about to launch, however, could be a boon to publishers because this supposedly simple solution makes it easy for publishers to create interactive features.According to the announcement on Venture Beat, the enhancement won’t cost the publishers any extra. The new features are likely to help publishers attract new subscribers while providing a richer experience for existing customers, improving retention. At the same time, advertisers get the opportunity to be more interactive with their target audiences. The downside, however, is a50% revenue share which may price smaller publishers out of the market. In other words, the tools are free to publishers, but they have to give up 50% of their revenue to get in front of Magzter’s 23 million users.Magzter didn’t say when they’d roll out the new tools, but Macworld and PC World will be among the first to beef up their digital content, according to Venture Beat. I’ll be waiting anxiously to see my favorite magazines jump on the interactive bandwagon.
