Microsoft Goes “Back to the Future” with Subscription-Free Office 2024

Microsoft offers Office 2024 as a one-time purchase option, catering to users who prefer traditional software over subscriptions.

On October 1, 2024, Microsoft made a significant move by offering its Office 2024 suite for a one-time purchase, giving users an alternative to the subscription-based Microsoft 365. This is the first time since 2021 that consumers can buy Microsoft’s popular productivity apps—Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Outlook—without committing to a recurring fee.

The decision to release Office 2024 comes in response to ongoing customer demand for a traditional software model. As a spokesperson for Microsoft noted, “We know some of our customers still prefer a non-subscription way to access our familiar apps, which is why we’re releasing Office 2024.”

Pricing and Editions
Office 2024 is available in two editions:

  • Office Home 2024: Priced at $149.99, this edition includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote for one PC or Mac.
  •  Office Home & Business 2024: Available for $249.99, this version adds Outlook and allows for commercial use of the apps.

Both editions can be purchased worldwide through retailers or directly from Microsoft’s website.

The Trade-Offs
While Office 2024 includes all the core apps that have made Microsoft a dominant force in productivity software, it comes with notable limitations compared to its subscription counterpart, Microsoft 365. Office 2024 will not receive ongoing updates, feature improvements, or real-time collaboration tools, and it lacks Copilot AI integration. It is a “locked-in-time” product, ideal for users who prefer stability over continual enhancements.

Microsoft’s Evolving Strategy
Microsoft has shifted heavily toward its Microsoft 365 subscription model in recent years, emphasizing the benefits of cloud-based functionality and AI-driven features. However, the company recognizes that some users prefer a non-subscription, standalone software option. By releasing Office 2024, Microsoft is providing flexibility for consumers and small businesses that want to avoid recurring costs and rely on traditional desktop applications.

For businesses, Microsoft also offers Office LTSC 2024 (Long Term Servicing Channel), which allows organizations to deploy Office 2024 alongside Microsoft 365 in hybrid environments, catering to diverse operational needs.

INSIDER TAKE

Microsoft’s decision to release Office 2024 reflects the company’s awareness of the diverse preferences among its user base. While the productivity software market increasingly shifts towards subscription models with cloud-based features and AI integration, there remains a strong demand for one-time purchase options. Office 2024 offers these users a sense of security in owning their software, even if it lacks the modern conveniences of its subscription-based counterpart.

The absence of continuous updates, however, highlights a growing divide between the needs of casual users and businesses that require real-time collaboration and cutting-edge functionality. For those who want the latest features, the subscription model remains the best option—but Office 2024 serves as a nostalgic nod to software ownership that many users still value.
