If you’re using Google Wallet to process your digital subscription payments, you may want to start looking for another processor.Google stated in an announcement last week that its digital goods API will be retired on March 2, 2015. They also indicated that since Wallet’s 2011 introduction, the payment processing “industry has matured a lot since then, providing a number of alternative payment options to choose from.”This development could be seen as Google getting out-gunned when it came to the digital payment processing space, with many other competitors now thriving in the marketplace.Originally conceived as a way for game developers to accept payments through their own websites, the API was developed as part of the larger Google Wallet suite of services for digital payment processing. Digital goods are anything that can be downloaded, sent via email, or granted access to, like subscription publishing or online video games.Google Wallet will still support payment processing through apps purchased in the Play Store, as well as purchases of physical goods online. After March 2, consumers will see a 404 error page when they attempt to pay via Google Wallet, so the onus is certainly on subscription merchants to change providers as soon as possible or they will see a disruption in their billing.
