Five on Friday: October 23rd, 2015

In this edition of Five on Friday, Diane Pierson looks at the growing use of ad-blocking software, copywriting tips, the optimal time to post

five on fridayAs the curator of the INSIDER Guide to New Product Development (NPD), I’m constantly keeping an eye out for bite-size information that will help you develop and scale better subscription products. Here’s my “Five on Friday” compilation for October 23rd, featuring the five best trends, tips, quotes or stats from my reading this week.

1. Use of Ad-Blocking Software is Growing

According to an Adobe and PageFair study that’s worth reviewing in its entirety:

“Ad blocking software is estimated to cost publishers $22 billion in revenue during 2015.”

2. Useful Copywriting Checklist

While this tool from Copyblogger focuses on advertorial-style writing, it’s a good checklist to give the new copywriter on your team, whether that person is in the marketing or editorial department. Some advice that works for everyone:

  • Introduction: Is your first sentence smooth, simple and incredibly easy to read?
  • Subheads: Are subheads evenly spaced (every three to six paragraphs) to break up copy and reinforce the page’s one dominant emotion?
  • Data: Does your copy provide concrete and credible data – i.e., numbers – to back up its claims?

3. Post on Facebook at 1 p.m. for Shares; 3 p.m. for Clicks

SocialTimes published an informative (if appallingly copy-edited) infographic on days and times to post on various social media to improve engagement. While these float around pretty frequently, it’s good data to review from time to time. The entire infographic can be found here.

4. Filing an LLC Just the First Step to Be Ready to Do Business

An excellent checklist from Entrepreneur on the other paperwork we need to file in order to be compliant with local, state and Federal regulations, not to mention protect ourselves from competitors and the IRS. No time to read the whole article? Here’s the list – plus one, and for good measure I’ve linked each to a helpful website:

  • Business license. Depending on where you live and work, you could need more than one; be sure to check your local/city offices.
  • Meet with a tax advisor. As the article says, not mandatory.  But an hour well spent.
  • Open a business bank account. Your tax advisor will thank you!
  • File a Doing Business As (DBA).
  • Protect your name by Trademarking it. Often we’re so focused on copyright that we forget this important step.
  • Understand what you need to do to stay compliant. Online fantasy leagues are hearing the Gaming Commission saber rattle, for example, not to mention the shift in credit fraud compliance. Keep abreast of existing and emerging regulations that impact your type of subscription model.

One more:  Many of us operate out of our homes. If not forever, at least to begin. I needed a license (at a cost of $82), to do so legally. Be sure to check your local as well as state and Federal licensing requirements.

Seem daunting? It is! I had good luck using LegalZoom to get me through most of the registration process – I had them gather the necessary documents, then filled them out myself to save money. It was expensive (my package was over $500), so you’ll need to balance the cost-versus-time based on your own situation.

5. From Hubspot’s “Guide to Facebook for Business:”

“You can pin/anchor a specific story to the top of your Timeline for up to seven days.

This means you can highlight specific posts and they won’t get buried by more recent updates.”

Have a great weekend, everyone.
