As the curator of the INSIDER Guide to New Product Development (NPD), I’m constantly keeping an eye out for bite-size information that will help you develop and scale better subscription products.

Here’s my “Five on Friday” list for June 5th, featuring the five best trends, tips, quotes or stats from my reading this week.

If A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words, Then . . .

This week, the eyes have it – five image-oriented insights as we head into the sunny days of summer:

We lived through Mobilegeddon earlier this year, but what other algorithm changes has Google made recently that we should be aware of in both our marketing and publishing efforts?  Below is a great Hubspot graphic on the changes Google’s made over time.  Recent changes that are important to us?  The prioritizing of encrypted and mobile-friendly sites.  Want to stand out?  Encrypt, think local and – mobilize!

. . . And, lest we forget the theme of this week’s five, stand out by adding imagery:

Articles with images get 94% more views than those without.

Images are invaluable to subscription content. For some of us, original artwork is either a necessary enhancement or central to the product itself.  But what about those of us who can’t afford to pay for expensive images from iStockPhoto or Shutterstock?  This blog from buffersocial provides 53 (plus!) sources for free- or attributed-use images.

Remember my note on Canva in the May 15 Five on Friday?  The buffersocial.com blog referenced above showcases a similar image-making site called Pablo.  The upshot – it’s getting easier to create sophisticated graphics for our blogs, marketing and subscriptions.

Here are  two  more  interesting infographics that caught  my eye this week:

Got another five minutes?  Watch this Bloomberg interview with former eBay exec Maynard Webb “Secrets for a Successful Product Launch” video interview.  No time?  The best quote:

“Sometimes you have to disrupt yourself to make sure no one else does it.”

Have a great weekend, everyone
