According to Bowker’s Global eBook Research, 24-35 year old men online in India are more likely to have paid for an ebook than any other population, including Americans. It’s not for fun — it’s to expand their careers. These men are downloading business and tech titles far more than fiction or hobby titles. They tend to buy online directly from publishers, not from a generalist store such as Amazon (for now anyway.) We suspect this points to opportunities for premium content publishers not just in ebooks, but also in paid online training and education products in the Indian marketplace. What’s needed now is more data on what the average price paid per business title is currently. We’ve pinged Bowker on that front and will update this post later. The least likely group were anyone in France at just 5% of the total online population having bought an ebook (compared to 26% of the aforementioned Indian men.) Japan were the next worst in line with 8% of the population having bought an ebook — but in that case we suspect they went direct to mobile for their content.
