Last week BOXO joined a growing list of subscription box services that deliver coffee beans right to your door, giving subscribers the opportunity to explore coffee from different U.S. roasters. There are currently two plans to choose from, a monthly plan starting at $28.99 and an annual plan starting at $299.99, including shipping. Both plans offer the option to choose two eight-ounce bags or two one-pound bags of coffee beans, and the price increases with the quantity selected. Gift subscriptions are also available.

Each roast is personally chosen by the BOXO team who travels to cities around the U.S. to learn about and sample local roasters’ best products. BOXO chooses two roasts each month that are “knock-your-socks-off amazing” to include in the subscription box. The beans are guaranteed to be shipped to subscribers within five days of roasting for optimal freshness.

“BOXO comes from my own passion for experiencing coffee from different places,” said founder Derek Kean in an announcement about the launch. “Our subscribers have the unique opportunity to have an adventure, a taste of the best coffee from a different city, delivered right to their doorsteps every month. BOXO is for people that love to explore a variety of flavor profiles and want to try what roasters from all over the country have to offer.”

So far, BOXO has featured roasters from Kansas City (Thou Mayest and Oddly Correct), Portland (Tanager and Cellar Door), Brooklyn (Brooklyn Roasting and City of Saints), Miami (Panther and Eternity) and Austin (Flat Track Coffee and Wild Gift).

BOXO is just the latest coffee subscription company catering to the nearly two-thirds of U.S. adults who drink at least one cup of coffee a day, according to Gallup. Competitors offering similar subscriptions include Counter Culture, Mistobox, Craft Coffee, Bean Box and, of course, Starbucks.

Each service offers its own product mix at varying price points. Bean Box, for example, offers coffee beans from small-batch independent roasters in Seattle, while Mistobox matches a subscriber’s tastes to artisan coffees from roasters in more than 30 countries.

Insider Take:

As subscription box categories (e.g., coffee, snacks, beauty products) become saturated with new players, companies like BOXO will have to work hard to differentiate themselves to get noticed and to grow a subscriber base sufficient to sustain the company long term. How many companies can the market really support?

Not only will coffee subscription companies need to beat or match price, externally, they need to offer a superior or sufficiently different product and a quality customer service experience. Internally, they need solid plans for marketing and operations.
